"If you like him, then I guess I should try to stay friends with him," Eira murmured to her partner before turning her attention to the starting battle. Eira watched with worry as the battle continued on and gradually got more intense, cursing herself for having wished for a longer performance than the last battle. While she had wanted a good show, she had not expected such a fierce fight with Mentus and Axew getting hurt badly. Eira had to admit that she didn't quite like Mentus since he was a Psychic type and that particular type had always put her on edge, but that didn't mean that she wanted harm to come to him, especially this much harm. She almost wanted to call it off and tell them that she had enough to go off of, but she knew that these trainers would not be happy with her interrupting them when they were trying so hard.

Zandrophin and Mentus had barely enough time to catch their breath before the next attack came. This time, instead of energy, it was stone that was thrown at Mentus. Zandrophin made a snide comment as Mentus began to dodge gracefully,
"Using the same trick again, old boy? You won't get much points for the visual show. Your form may be effective, but it lacks style; it lacks...ingenuity.
Don't bother throwing the rocks back...just break through them.
Sir, if I can get close enough...Calm Mind might--
Just do what you have to, old friend.
Mentus shattered all the rocks that got in his way as he moved towards Axew. Just when he was about to be in range for Calm Mind to really take effect, Mentus was struck by one of the rocks. The Abra began to shake...an ominous aura forming around him.
Sir...I'm ending this...NOW!!
Mentus siezed Axew in the light purple aura of Psychic. With his opponent in his grasp, Mentus attempted to exert his will upon Axew. However...the residual electricity was making it difficult. The more trained eye would take note that the aura was fluctuating in power and intensity...meaning that something was wrong.
Sir...the charge in the air is keeping me from focusing...he may break free...but he won't do it easily...

"AXEW!" yelled Z as his partner was gripped by the mental energies of Zandrophin's mentus. The little dragon pokemon struggled hard trying to break free of the psycokinitic grip that mentus had on his body. Z knew that if he didn't think of something soon, then the battle would be over. "Axew, can you move?" Ax Axew," cried Axew, *I can't* 'Damnit,' thought Z, 'I can't let it end like this, but I can't counter this. Why didn't I see this coming and create a countermeasure? He even uses this at his last contest against those houndoom. Why didn't I see it?'

Mentus was barely able to contain his target within his grip...the charged particles in the air were really beginning to take a toll on his concentration. Nonetheless, he kept trying to impress his will upon the dragon. He amplified the power of his telekinetic attack. This only proceeded to further excite the particles in the air. Small sparks of lightning began to dot the airspace between and around the combatants.
Then, one big spark came and hit Mentus in the forehead. For a brief second, the field around Axew lessened in intensity. Mentus was struggling to recover.
Sir...there may be a problem...

Marcus walked into the booth quietly behind Sofa, who rushed to the front to see the fight going on; his eyes observing intently. As he leaned against the wall, Marcus let out Lex so he could see what a pokemon battle was really like.
So much for not wanting to harm others...All talk and changes what he says under pressure, like always. I hope he doesn't lose his cool and end up seriously hurting that axew. Marcus looked to Eira, still feeling bad for his behavior earlier. It's her village, she can run it like she wants. Doesn't make her right; but it wasn't my place to tell her.
Marcus' face crunched as he looked out at the battle and saw z struggle with what to do. Come on z, think. Just because he can't move doesn't mean he can't do anything. It's not about winning, it's about putting on a show.
Z looked around at the arena, trying to think up his next move. He glanced at the broken pieces of the ice stage and noted the static that was taking its toll on the powerful abra. Z glanced at the crowd and remembered: this was about the show, not the battle. Z noted that Axew was moving a bit easier and made a choice. "Axew," said Z, "how much can you move?" Axew wiggled a bit and responded, "Ax Axew." *A bit better.* "Alright," said Z, "power up a dragon claw and see if you can break free." Axew struggled and was able to break the hold on his body and began skating at Mentus wit a dragon claw ready.

Sir...I....I can't hold him anymore. I cannot maintain focus. He's going to break--
When Axew freed himself, Mentus stopped hovering, and began falling.
No! Mentus, hang on!
Mentus hit the stage, his body crumpled and his posture somewhat distorted and twisted.
"Men--" Zandrophin took one step forward, then his head snapped to the side, and he collapsed.
"SQUIRTLE!!!"
A cry of agony was heard at the other end of the stage. Squirt rushed forward, running to his trainer and trying to revive him. He'd never seen anything like this before; he had no idea what to do; he felt...useless. Frantically, he kept attempting to get Zandrophin to wake up. He shook him, struck him, and even splashed water on his face...nothing. The shelled Pokemon began to cry.
"Squir...squirtle...squirt..."
As he wept, Squirt began to glow. He continued crying.
"Squirtle...squ....squor..sqwortortle...WAR!!"
Squirt stopped glowing. He had evolved into Wartortle. He turned around and faced off at Z. He didn't know what happened, but he assumed it was this boy's fault...and he would make him suffer for what he did.
"Wartortle!" he shouted, pointing at Z. He looked the trainer in the face and, using his finger, drew a horizontal line across his neck.
"....Squirt...." the turtle heard a weak and voice from behind him, "Stand down..."

"AXEW STOP!" yelled Z. Axew tried to stop his sliding across the ice, but his momentum was too great. Finally he slammed his dragon claw into the ice to use a brakes. the technique worked, but it tore up the stage even more. Z looked at the wartortle with admiration. A pokemon that evolves to protect its trainer has a powerful bond with that trainer. Even the bond between him and his pokemon wasn't quite at that level yet. Z glanced at Zandrophin, hoping that he was ok, considering that he had suddenly collapsed when Axew broke free.
Lex hopped onto the chair next to Eira to get a better view, amazed by the sight he was seeing. There were giant ice spikes everywhere, and there was electricity shooting in between them all around the contest hall. It looked like the bolts were alive, jumping from one spike to the other in an erratic pattern.
Marcus' eyes shot wide open at the events that just occurred. What...just happened? Does he have some sort of mind link with Mentus? Marcus was actually surprised that he felt concern for zandrophin's health. I knew he always had a strong connection, but I didn't think it was this strong...Has Mentus never fainted before? I guess that makes sense, he's incredibly strong for an Abra and he doesn't seem to like to take risks. Still...it's odd that they've never been bested in battle before.
Is his squirtle...what's the deal with pokemon evolving at contests? Is it a thing now? Did I start a trend? I'd better be getting paid royalties for them stealing my bit
Maya had a sudden moment of dread when Mentus fell and she could sense that this was not good. She jumped out of her seat, Bo tumbling out her lap, crying out in shock. Though she jumped up as if to take action she merely stood, unsure of what to do.
She had faintly sensed it before and could see it in the way the two of them interacted with one another but she didn't think it would be so strong. Strong enough for him to collapse when his pokemon fainted. Maya had at least heard of it before with trainers so close to their psychic pokemon... they share everything... including pain.
Zandrophin managed to get to his feet. He groaned in pain, staggered for a bit, and then straightened up. He moved over to Mentus, Squirt following at his heels. Zandrophin picked Mentus up, cradling him in one arm. He placed his first two fingers on Mentus' forehead and spoke one word:
"Awaken."
Mentus began to shake, then he looked around, and slowly began to levitate out of Zandrophin's arm. He didn't make it far, though. He fell right back into Zandrophin's arm and passed out again.
"Rest now, old friend. You've earned it."
Zandrophin looked at Z and said,
"I concede defeat to you, Sir." He bowed gracefully, as a true showman, and continued "You have bested me in this contest of strength, and you didn't look half bad doing it. Congratulations. I hope you rack up plenty of points."
He extended his hand.

Eira squeezed her eyes shut in attempt to block out the sight of Axew being attacked by Mentus' Psychic abilities, even though she knew rationally that she was supposed to keep her eyes open for any sign of a good show. At this point she just couldn't help it after her years of fearing Psychic types and their telekinetic abilities, so she was unable to watch as Axew broke free and tried to fight back. It wasn't until Maya yelled to her that she opened her eyes and saw what had occurred on stage, causing her to jump up from her seat in worry. "Someone gather the nurses for standby! Zandrophin, are you and Mentus okay?"
The Red woman watched with a large, aha sort of smile. Something was wrong, or had she misjudged the abra's strength? Her hair stuck itself to her bare shoulder. No. There's residual electrical charge. Perhaps... Both Zandrophin and his abra fainted. Akane's aha smile grew even wider when she realized she had just found Zandrophin's biggest weakness. Their symbiotic relationship was impeccable. She smiled so cruelly, anyone around her would have thunk her mad. She truly did feel sorry, somewhere deep down. She would be sure to send him a little something.
"End the Battle!"
Akane looked over to see Maya standing and asking the battle be finished. Houndoom howled his agreement. Zandrophin did manage to wake up, but he and Mentus would be worn out for awhile. It was heart-wrenching to see the poor abra struggle to get up, only to fall back in his trainer's arms. The red lady was not physically phased, but the little pokemon tugged at her heart strings. Many psychic type pokemon were utilized in slavery.
Zandrophin extended his hand for a shake. The red woman laughed out loud at that. She was most amused by his strength and resolve.
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Z smiled and shook Zandrophin's hand, "you were a fierce opponent. If it wasn't for the static, then Axew would have lost easily. I look forward to our next battle and hope to grow even stronger from it." Axew walked up to Zandrophin and extended his hand to shake as well. Z smiled at the actions of his little partner and chuckled, "looks like axew agrees with me. Though I hope Eira isn't mad that we trashed her stage." Z looked around at the ruined ice stage that had been hit with numerous powerful attacks and was badly broken in places.
Z was a grateful battler. Akane respected him for it. He was right. Zandrophin could have swiftly killed his little pokemon without batting an eye. Not that it would have ended well for him. She just couldn’t help but smile at her new knowledge. She knew they were linked, but linked to that level, they would be capable of many things. The red woman began to wonder if perhaps Zandrophin developed psychic powers as well. Perhaps the exposure could do that. The red woman looked over to Eira who seemed relieved Zandrophin didn’t snap or show his darker side. Akane waited for her to call them back to the stage.
