She raised an eyebrow at him. "I learned once back home... The place of standoffish people if you recall. Though it has been a while since then." Dororo snickered slightly. "I would not mind meditating though... You're right I could use it but..." She stood from the fountain. "I can't help but notice that you seem to enjoy tormenting him." She nodded toward where Marcus headed to.
Dororo sat happily in the spray of the fountain as she sat again and folded her legs beneath her. "You have some history with him. I can tell... Not that isn't any of my business..." She gave him a grave look. "But that torment might come back and bite you in the but." She looked away. "Again not my problem. Ignore me. How about showing me that meditation then?"
Zandrophin became slightly defensive at this new girl trying to get involved with his business. He curtly replied,
"You're right...it's not your business...kindly stay out of it...that's all I ask."
Clearing his throat, Zandrophin continued,
"Now..as far as meditation goes...it's not terribly difficult, once you've tried it. You said you learned once before? That's good...this will be a cinch for you. I want you to close your eyes and take three long, deep breaths. Next, I want you to relax your muscles; allow your mind to wander a bit, not too far, but don't fence it in. Breathe. If it helps, focus on something you need to do...perhaps you will find clarity of mind and, in doing so, uncover some previously-hidden method to solving it. Keep your breathing low and circular; just keep breathing...and find your center."
At this, Zandrophin slipped into his meditative state, hoping that Maya had managed to do the same.
Old friend, if she doesn't, help her along with Calm Mind...she needs to relax a bit; some mental clarity would do her a world of good.
Of course, Sir...I'd be happy to.

Maya closed her eyes. "Won't happen again," she said as she followed his instructions, feeling her muscles unwind and the slouch I her shoulders was a little less tense. She took even breaths, recalling his instructions and the ones her father had told her years ago at the temple. Things were somewhat less stressful back then.
Dororo settled down next to her, legs crossed and eyes shut.
Occasionally... Things slipped into the forefront of her mind. Nerves about finding her aunt, her dead parents, the destroyed temple... Regigas... She took a sharp breath and forced the thoughts back. Her breath evened out again.
Walking back, Marcus saw the four of them sitting on the fountain meditating and just stood there surprised, Beautiful. He doesn't like how she shuts him down at every turn, so he gets her to loosen up her mind and doesn't have to talk to her. I'm glad I met her already.
As they walked up to the group, Marcus turned to Sofa and placed a finger to his mouth. If they want to meditate, there's no reason we shouldn't let them. With that, Marcus closed his eyes. Gives me more time to plan anyway.
With zandrophin around, we can expect a lot of sarcastic insults. I should get these feelings out of the way now. Marcus breathed deep in and out. I really don't like him. He abuses people, uses them and delights in manipulating them just for the sake of it. And if he can get something out of it, then bonus for him. I know this. I shouldn't let that get to me. Just accept it as inevitable and move on.
Now for planning. He could teleport out of there at any moment and leave us high and dry, so I shouldn't plan with him in mind. We follow the trails, make it to the outpost and move from there. Sofa can tell when danger is near, so we'll avoid problems when possible for Maya's sake. When we get to the outpost, we'll ask around for her aunt or any other town or village to the west. Then we move on up north. Clean, calm and according to plan. Marcus opened one eye to look at zandrophin.
And if thing's don't go according to plan, we'll adjust accordingly.
Zandrophin sensed Marcus' return from the post office. Without saying a word, he silently stood up, walked over to behind Maya and knelt down. He placed a hand lightly on her shoulder and whispered gently into her ear,
"Miss Maya, it's time to come back. Our stalwart leader is here to guide us on our path to a new adventure."
As Maya stirred and tried to come back to reality, Zandrophin walked over besides Marcus, arms crossed, and muttered out of the side of his mouth,
"Mentally, she's a lot more loosened up. No need to thank me, but she may be more willing to cooperate with your brand of small talk. I'm still not sure if I have much interest in getting to know her, so I'm not planning on talking much to her. Your ball game now, Chief."
Speaking loud enough so the entire group could hear, he continued,
"So, Chief...did you learn anything? Do we have some semblance of an inkling of a rough idea of a direction to go?"

"The postmaster there said people come down from the north all the time with letters for their loved ones. He said that at first he assumed it was just people from the outpost up north just past the forest, but there were too many letters from too many people. He'd asked where they were from, but not how they got back there.
Good news is, there's a half-way point between our goal and our current position, so we should be able to get provisions and rest, most likely. On top of that, it appears a lot of people travel to and from that outpost, so we should have no problem following their trails. Bad news is, we still haven't a clue where exactly we're going. Still, we can see if there's anyone who could help us up at the outpost."
Zandrophin nodded...at least now there was an objective, a waypoint.
"I'm not too concerned about not knowing where we're going...and I'm curious as to why you are, O great leader...you struck me as the adventuring type...this should be right up your alley. Are you really so worried about getting lost that you're not going to enjoy the opportunity to explore a relatively-uncharted area? I thought the excitement of braving an inhospitable area was the paramount of such endeavors...Still, you're the boss. I'm just here to follow along."
You're pushing your luck with him, Sir.
I am well aware...I am testing his resolve and his control...all part of the plan.

Marcus let out a short stressed sigh. "I'm concerned because we're going to be traveling through a wasteland. No fruits to pick, no trees to make a shelter out of. If we get lost and pass out, odds are we won't wake up." Marcus moved closer to zandrophin, "Unlike you, I'm adventurous, not suicidal. Especially when other people's lives are at stake," Marcus turned around and started walking north, "I actually care about people besides myself."
Zandrophin shrugged and jogged after Marcus, he spoke quietly so Maya wouldn't hear,
"Be careful what you say, old boy...jumping to conclusions about people's character is dangerous...you may jump too far."
Zandrophin fell back and took up the rear for a while. He'd figured Sofa would have the vanguard position, and decided it would be best to alert the rest if danger were to come from behind.
Somebody has to watch his back...because he sure as hell isn't...

Maya had long since opened her eyes and merely watched these two banter back and forth with a flicker of amusement. These two were really something. It was like watching one of those movies with the villain monologuing to the hero... She couldn't say which was which but she was leaning towards Zandrophin being the mustache twirling villain. He fit the part.
She watched them whisper to each other with a bore frown, cheek resting on her hand. Dororo seemed to mimic her pose and sat with his head on his webbed hand, equally bored. Maya was starting to wonder if this would be the whole trip there.
"When do you think we'll leave, Oro?" She asked, looking down and asking him.
Marcus headed out of town with his party in tow, making his way up to the southern-most part of the forest. "You smell anything, buddy?" Marcus turned towards Sofa, already smelling around for a scent to follow. Suddenly, he had a breakthrough and wandered west, just in front of the tree line. As he came to a stop, a clear, wide path led into the forest, definitely broken in and walked often.
Marcus turned back to face the rest of the group. "You can still turn back now. No one is forcing you to. This will be dangerous. This may be our last chance. Make your decision now."
Zandrophin saw the rather imposing forest in front of him.
A tactical nightmare, Sir....
Then he watched Sofa redirect their path. Zandrophin wondered what was up, and then saw that the ape had found a well-traveled path. He couldn't help but make a comment at Marcus' warning,
"Trying to scare away your help, Chief? Not the best idea, in my opinion, but that's not my call...you're still in charge. I still plan on going ahead with this...who would enact my fourth plan if you suddenly go section 8 on us?"

Yup this is how she thought it would go as she followed after them some distance behind. Back and forth banter and power struggle. She spent most of her time trudging after them, murmuring and speaking with Dororo who sat on her shoulder as per usual. These two were most amusing at times though. Maya thought she might have seen a tv show similar to this...
"I really have no other choice and have no intention of backing down," Maya said. "You can't scare me out of a plan once I start going. I stick to it. I say lead on."
"Froak!" Dororo said confidently and pointing ahead.
"Alright...if that's what you want." Marcus turned back towards the forest, it's trees blocking view of more than 40 feet back. Marcus knew this trip wasn't going to be the slow and joyful trek that his and Sofa's journey here had been. I swear, I'm going to end up killing him before this trip is through...
Marcus looked back one more time at the sleepy port town. It really was calm and peaceful. Not a thing happened here, and nobody minded it. They were about to embark on a trip that was not going to be nearly as inviting as Enya. Nor as uneventful. Life'd be far too boring...
"Alright. Let's go." Marcus took the first step into the forest and left the sleepy town of Enya behind.
