Astina was unsure of how to feel about the performance that she had just witnessed. On one hand it was amazing and clearly showed that the contestants knew what they were doing, but was it actually creepy like the red chieftess wanted? Looking down at Quartz, Astina wondered how these people could find a skull creepy? At the announcement of the score, Astina looked to Nicole in confusion. "Miss Nicole, is that score really hard to get?"
Oh dear Maya supposed that would be her and Maleko then wouldn't it... She brought out her dusk ball with paper seals plastered over it. She broke the seals and out popped Elly, twirling and clearly excited.
"No funny business okay?" Maya demanded of the chandelier Pokemon. Elly gave a wispy giggling sound but appeared to agree. "All right then," she sighed. "Maleko are you ready?" She looked to the boy uncertainly, not terribly confident in this herself. She had better look like she have a handle on her nerves when she steps out there. It occurred to her that she may have to portray a more confident facade as head priestess of a region... Maybe this veil over her face was a good thing then.
With that she stepped up on the edge of the stage and waited for Maleko to follow.
Was it really their turn already? Could he do this? Looking at Shard, whom he had decided would stay back for the time being, he reached into his pocket and looked at the pokeball that contained one of his newer partners. "Alright, c-come on out Shiver." The ball was then thrown a little ways into the air, and the red light of the ball opening was seen. Shiver shook himself out as soon as he was fully released, looking up at Maleko with an expectant look, the little ornament-like cauldrons that Maleko had put on his spikes shaking with each movement he made.
After all that was said and done, Maleko took a deep breath and let it go, following after Maya onto the stage. Sure he had not answered her prior question, but he hoped his actions were enough to signal his "ready or not" attitude.
”For this next round, I would like to introduce the next team. We have a veteran cooridinater here with us today, I’m sure you all remember Maleko from just south of here, and his partner Maya!”
The red lady was gracious with the amount of time she waited for them to quiet down. No need to rush. She mused, but her guards unfortunately had to melt down the skeleton to make room for the next challengers. Once they had finished, Akane had already returned to her seat and urged them with a swift hand gesture to begin as they may.
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Maya supposed that was her cue. The chains of her dress clanged as she swung her arms out, giant sleeves billowing. "Elly! Showtime!" She called. "Shadow Ball!"
With that Elly appeared in the middle of the arena, in a flurry of embers and glowing purple flames. "Chaaaaaaan~" She called, giving some semblance of a curtsey, dark glowing particles gathered above her head, globbing together like water droplets on a flat surface, forming a large Shadow Ball above her head, gaining in size till it was about a fourth of the size of the stage. The dark, purplish orb swirled and spun slowly, like a planet turning on its axis. Now it was Maleko's part next.
Was that seriously their cue? And Maya had already called out her contribution? Crap, he needed to get his act together and fast! Thinking quickly, he looked over at Shiver and called out the first thing that came to his mind. "Shiver, use Razor Leaf!" This was followed immediately by Shiver giving a small confirmation cry before he shot his arms out sending the leaves that had been called for towards the ball made of darkness. To the surprise of Maleko, somehow is Pokemon was able to not only get the leaves to hit the Shadow Ball, but go inside and around it making it look like it was causing some sort of dark storm in the air above the stage. Glancing over at Maya, Maleko gave a small nod before trying to think of what else he could do while he was at it. After a moment, a thought hit him and he called out another attack. "Shiver, use Ice Beam!" The result, again had a call of confirmation before the attack took to the air. The ice made contact with the Shadow Ball and Razor Leaf freezing it in place in the form of a grotesque looking eye shape. Looking over at Maya he gave a small shrug, as though he was unsure of what else they could do at that moment.
Maya bit her lip, glancing about. That had worked better than she expected. What else could go with this theme?
"Elly! Energy Ball!" She called out, inspiration striking her. "Surround that... thing!" Well that was eloquently stated.
Thankfully it appeared that Elly knew what she meant as a shimmering green energy began to gather and grow, as if blowing a balloon. The surface of the green ball wobbled and swirled with a rainbow of colors, as it were the surface of a soap bubble with a faint glow to it. Soon the ball had connected with the frozen mass of purple and engulfed it within itself without it popping or being destroyed. The creepy looking eye within the bubble remained visible from within the translucent Energy Ball.
It reminded Maya of a snow globe and she waited expectantly, hoping Maleko could follow that up.
Okay... now what could he do? He didn't know how to follow that, unless.... Hoping that Maya would not be upset with him for his next move he took a deep breath and called out a timid "Shiver, Wood Hammer." Almost instantaneously Shiver turned one of his hands into a hammer and bring it into the center of the ice eye causing it to crack and allow for the Shadow Ball that was trapped inside to start escaping. The effect was eerie in Maleko's eyes as he watched the now cracked eye begin to leak what was once frozen out into the audience. Looking to Maya he gave yet another shrug and hoped that she could work with what he had done. He didn't know what else he could do at this point to help, since to him, he had put their team at a disadvantage with the fact he had mostly grass types and the point of the contest was to be spooky.
Maya bit her lip a little unsure of what to do. It needed to be a big finish, something that would be more... Maya sighed. Go big or go home I suppose.
"Elly! Overheat!" She called.
Elly gave an excited trill as she realized what her trainer wanted her to do. She phased through the ice ball that continued to leak the eerie power of the Shadow Ball. A great heat began to build within Elly, tinging her a burning red. Some of the ice began to melt to Maya's dismay but it had the desired effect. Elly let the power explode out, bursting the great ice ball and the things trapped inside it. The leaves were instantly incinerated and the Shadow Ball dispersed. The ice ball burst in a shimmer of ice shards that caught the light of the fire before evaporating. Instantly their creation was gone, as fleeting as a the finale of a firework show. Well that was that.
Having heard Maya tell her Pokemon to use Overheat, it was easy to say that their show was completed. Or at least it was easy for him to interpret it to be over. Looking down at Shiver, Maleko gave the Pokemon a smile and a pat on the head. "G-Good job, buddy." Shiver gave a small happy sound at the praise and looked over at the woman whose Pokemon he had been assist to make sure that the performance was truly done. From the sounds of it, his trainer could not think of anything else to add to the performance to make it any longer than it had turned out to be. While his Pokemon was doing this, Maleko was secretly hoping that he had not messed up their performance in anyway. He knew that he had put himself and Maya at a disadvantage by using Shiver, and now he could only hope it wasn't going to affect their score too much.
The red queen knew she was being shallow, but as shallow as the audience when it came to the next performance, mainly because, it’s hard to top a score of almost one-hundred points. Watching intently as she could, making sure to catch every little detail after having witnessed a superior performance, she soon rose from the shallow depths of her attention and chair as the routine went on. Her favorite part was the combination moves piled on one after another, it was unique and inspiring. After the performance, she rose from her throne-like chair.
”Well, that was short and sweet, but I did love your moves and how they stacked upon one another. It was unique, and I loved the eye, Maleko. I expected nothing less from a veteran trainer such as yourself.” She smiled sweetly after not being disappointed at all byt their performance.
”And to you Maya, I think that this was an excellent debut for your contest career. I love the pokemon, she was the most perfect choice for my competition.” She beamed.
”I am pleased to grant you both a solid seventy-three points! Do not fret; your score has earned you an excellent springboard for the next round.” She smiled and after the roar of the crowd died down, she introduced her next competitors.
”Now, please welcome our veteran coordinator, Nicole and her partner Astina!”
Naturally the crowd wasn’t sure about Astina since she had never been there, but the audience roared and stamped their feet after remembering Nicole’s extremely close second place at her last contest in Celosia. Fennekins became the must have for any contest enthusiast in Celosia after her performance.
Astina jumped at the sound of her name, looking worriedly towards Nicole for any sign of how she should enter the stage. Was there a special way to do so or do they just walk out there like it was nothing? What kind of event was this? Was it supposed to be a formal entrance or a dramatic entrance or even just a simple entrance? She had so many questions and so little time to ask them that it almost made her sick as she clutched Quartz tighter to her chest.
"Don't be nervous." Nicole said calmly, looking over at the girl who she was to be working with. "Just do what feels right. Be yourself." She didn't know if she was being helpful or not, but she was just speaking from her experience of her previous time at the hall. "If you do that, you'll feel a lot better about being on the stage. Just because you are on the stage, doesn't change who you are. So whenever you are ready, make your appearance." Nicole hoped that the other would be alright going out first. She had an idea that she wanted to use that may or may not get them some points in the long run. To do that though, she needed to make sure no one else knew the trick she was going to play. And to that meant waiting to see what the other girl would do.
Astina could almost feel herself shaking as she went to enter the stage, though Nicole's words had helped her nerves quite a bit. She glanced down at Quartz to check if she was ready, but saw that the lazy Pokemon was asleep. Taking a step back, she placed Quartz on a nearby seat and called for Ruby to come to her. When Ruby sank into her arms, Astina felt a lot calmer as she turned back to enter the stage.
Stepping onto the stage, it was like all of her worries had washed away since it was then that she realized that this was just like the ceremonies she participated in back home. All she had to do was make this look good and that should be simple enough, right?
"Alright Ruby, let's try a Perish Song," Astina murmured to her partner, releasing the Ghost type so she could float forward on the stage. Ruby began to sing softly, feeling nervous in front of such a large crowd. Astina frowned at how quiet she was being before an idea struck her that would make Ruby be much louder. "Use Echoed Voice too."
Ruby's gem began to glow slightly as her Perish Song was amplified so that every note resounded around the room, letting everyone hear the notes that she was horribly singing.
"So she wants to start this out like that huh?" Nicole questioned looking down at Pandora who gave a small canine shrug. “Well, then, shall we make our entrance?” She questioned giving a small smirk of amusement to the nod she gained from the Zorua whose eyes flashed for only a moment before, instead of a Zorua, a Ninetails stood beside her instead. “Let’s go mess with their minds.” She said before, she and her “Ninetails” made their way onto the stage. “Nero, use Torment!” She called once she was close enough to where Astina and her Pokemon, Ruby(was it?), were.
The “Ninetails” immediately started to look aggravated and, almost like in some sort of twisted reality, small smoke-like things began to form around “him” all with odd little squiggles of black within them. Then the “Ninetails’” face seemed to twist into “Pain” almost like it, itself was feeling tormented by the song that was echoing around the room, even though it was not actually directed towards “him” as it would be in battle.
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
