Marcus was suddenly incredibly sad, and he didn't know why. He was confused and had no idea what to do, what to think. "I...I don't even know what to think of this. I don't...I don't want to think about this right now." He turned to his friend. "Sofa, you see? It's fine."
Marcus paused for a second. "I'm sorry for partially causing this. Thank you for showing him. Good luck in the second half." He turned around and stormed off dragging Sofa with him. "Come on. We need to get ready if we want to win." Marcus walked right past his new friends as he was doing his best to ignore any thoughts or emotions that were trying to come to his mind. Just focus on what's ahead. Worry about it later. Just...worry about it later.
"You ready to show your strength?" Z asked Axew. "Xew Axew!" "Alright," said Z, "We'll show them that we can battle even if we're rookies!" "Axew!" said Axew as it pumped it's fist.

Again with the winning, Sir? What else drives your species?
Emotions, mostly. Or, like in his case, the far worse state: confusion. He doesn't know what to feel...and that concerns me. We need to be even more careful now...I fear we may have an enemy.
Well...that was faster than expected, Sir.
Come on, old friend...let's see what's waiting for us in the second round.
Do not fight for a cause or for what you believe in: Fight for yourself, because who you are rarely changes. Zandrophin
“You all have done well in the preliminary part of this competition. But this next part is the real show, and a show I expect. I want my audience to not regret their coming here today. Creativity and resourcefulness is key to getting those bonus points.”
She inhaled deeply for her speech, it was a long one.
“I know that all of you have no real prior experience in this style of battle.” She giggled at the irony. “But alas, a contest is still a battle even when the competition is against a judge and other coordinators rather than a pokemon. To keep that in mind for all of you as you leave these halls, today’s competition will be a one-sided battle! Raise the curtains!” The red lady raised her hands to the intricate ceiling. I can never really leave the battle.
The room lit up even more when the curtains were drawn to their side posts. Four low-level houndooms stood in a line growling and roaring, but too well-trained to move. The intent was one for each contestant. The crowd roared with cheers. Their beloved queen never failed to disappoint their bloodlust.
“Let it be known, my contests are freestyle meaning any and all of your pokeomon’s moves numerous times over. My judgment favors those who are creative and able to fully utilize everything in the arena to their advantage, from the objects, or in this case foe pokemon, to the spectators and even the judge herself.” Akane’s smile twisted more. “Or even to use your pokemon’s moves to trip up, strike fear into, or confuse their opponent’s pokemon; a classic use of their pokemon’s ability only seen from back home in Hoenn!” She drug out the “en” in Hoenn.
The audience members that were originally from Hoenn made themselves known through their screams and cheers. Akane’s eyes darted over to Zandrophin. The abra he was using should have n problems messing with the other competitors. I’d be surprised if he hasn’t already. That’s no average abra.
“These houndooms are trained to use only one move and that is flamethrower. They are low level, weak, so no damage should happen to any of you or your pokemon, and they are prepared for the worst. Making them faint is completely legal and if the finishing blow is truly spectacular and powerful, bonus points ensue.”
“They and their trainers get a fully paid week of pampering to make up for it anyway.” She mumbled to her guards and they chuckled.
“I want to see you shape this stage’s atmosphere to your advantage, I want you to be showy, in full-control of you and your pokemon. I want you to utilize every single one of your pokemon’s moves to shape this “battle” completely in your favor and I want to be amazed, dazzled, and a witness to a perfectly picture-esque battle. I want you all to utilize your opponent’s moves, to make them your own by making your pokemon’s moves all the flashier. Lady Eira should have no trouble with that.” She gestured towards the first contestant. “Fire and ice has always been one of my favorites.”
The crowd roared in excitement. This was going to be a one-of-kind contest, and the only one Akane would ever host like this. She was always a fan of normal flashy free-style, but contests were dying in popularity due to non-pokemon on pokemon battles in the main-land. Here she was making a stand for her beloved form of entertainment in her region of Asemon; even though the houndooms would not attack the contestant pokemon. The red lady quieted the roaring audience.
“I formally apologize for putting so much pressure on all of you today, to do something in a competition never seen before, and to do it with so little time to prepare. But I believe in your resolve and abilities. Good luck.”
The red lady flipped her hair back and straightened her posture. She stood tall upon her platform which isolated her from everyone else. Her light blue-green eyes pierced daggers into every single one of her contestants. She raised her voice even louder.
“May the games begin!”
No burns+1 Full utilization of the houndoom’s flamethrowers (dodging, dancing, using them to make your pokemon’s own attacks stronger or prettier, etc.) +2 Not using the houndooms at all -3 The flashiest final blow+4
Tidbits
*The point of this contest is to choreograph a routine using the houndoom either for making more beautiful and/or powerful moves out of its flamethrower, or to show off your pokemon’s offensive power on real pokemon (as if they were a dummy) if they don’t have special attacks. Using the houndoom is not required but bonus points assured.
*Pokemon moves are unlimited.
*Godmodding and inflicting status conditions on the NPC houndooms is perfectly acceptable.
*If you have moves that inflict status conditions on other pokemon you can try to inflict the other coordinator’s pokemon with those status conditions. However you cannot godmod the other contestants into getting those conditions.
*If you have no idea what to do check out the bottom of this page for idea on move combinations. Then describe them to me in the best way possible.
*Don’t forget, be creative! This is where those bonus points really shine through! (as seen how zan tied with eira) Make them count!
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Eira froze at the announcement that they would actually be battling against Pokemon. Spheal rolled back to her and nudged her leg so she would start moving towards the stage. Eira's thoughts whirled wildly as she tried to come up with a plan to face the ferocious looking Houndoom that was supposed to be her opponent. She and Spheal had never been in a battle before, let alone one where she had to amaze a judge. She took a deep breath in an attempt to steady herself as she looked around the stage for any ideas of what to do. She caught sight of some light spilling through the stained glass windows, creating rainbow shimmers high above them and that gave her enough of an idea to start with.
"Alright Spheal, use Blizzard," she instructed, her voice shaking with her nerves as she prayed that her idea would work out for the better just like the last round. Spheal rolled out onto the field as one of the Houndoom jumped forward to meet him. Spheal immediately attacked the Houndoom with a wave of freezing wind and snow, but was met with a flamethrower that quickly melted the ice away. "Roll away and aim up!"
Spheal rolled to the side and aimed his Blizzard towards the ceiling, trusting his human to know what she was doing. The light coming through the windows caught on the ice in the attack, making it shimmer as ice and snow began to rain down onto the field and coat it with a soft layer. As Spheal continued to attack the ceiling, a charcoal grey cloud began to form and create snow of its own that began to fall gently to the fiel, fueled by Spheal's Blizzard. Houndoom jumped forward to attack with flamethrower once more, but ended up slipping on some of the snow, allowing Spheal the time to roll away from the attack. It was quite obvious that Spheal was used to moving around in slippery terrain as he easily made turns and moved around the icy field so Houndoom could not attack.
"Now add your Aurora Beam!" Eira instructed, becoming a little excited as things began to work out much better than she thought they would. Spheal came to an abrupt halt in the ice and shot his rainbow colored attack towards the gathered cloud of ice and snow near the ceiling. When the beam reached the dark cloud, it seemed to be swallowed up into the darkness. Eira began to think that the combination had failed after a moment, but then was pleasantly surprised when the rainbow light from the aurora began to shine through, making the cloud and the ice falling from it glow and shimmer as if it too was made up of the aurora. Eira smiled brightly at the glitter ice that was beginning to build up more and more on the field thanks to the combined ice attacks, her happiness growing as she watched Houndoom struggle to stand in the slippery substance it was not used to. Eira looked over at Spheal and the two nodded to each other. "Let's wrap this up with an Ice Ball barrage!"
Spheal began to roll through the snow in a wide circle around Houndoom. Houndoom attempted to use flamethrower on Spheal, but the little Ice type was becoming too fast to be hit as he began to pick up more and more speed. As he rolled around Houndoom, Spheal turned himself on his side so that he could aim his attack at Houndoom. The first ball of ice to come from Spheal was small, but it was just large enough to knock the struggling Houndoom down to the ground once more. Round two was a little larger than the first and picked up some of the light from the floating aurora as it traveled before it struck Houndoom. The third round missed Houndoom by a hair and shattered against the wall before falling in a sparkling wave. Spheal stopped dead in his roll out of annoyance with himself and aim the fourth Ice Ball up towards the ceiling. Upon release, the large ball of ice was swallowed up by the glowing rainbow cloud before it began to fall back down towards the field. Eira was amazed as she watched the ball of ice fall because it now had what looked to be a rainbow trailing behind it like a tail. The ball crashed onto the filed next to Houndoom, shattering into hundreds of shimmering rainbow pieces that sprayed out and hit everything around where it had landed.
Eira covered her face as the shards of ice flew towards her as well so she didn't get cut by any of it. When she lowered her arms, she saw that the cloud had dissipated from the ceiling and that Houndoom had been hit with enough shards of ice to make it unable to stand from the iced over field. Eira hesitated before she slowly stepped further onto the field and awkwardly bowed to the audience, unsure of exactly just happened.
"Excellent job." The red lady clapped. She was indeed impressed with the frost woman. "You've done well. You were given an immense challenge given that your pokemon is ice, and as stated before, fire and ice has always been one of my favorite combinations. But your pokemon made the stage a frozen wonderland, perhaps I should have warned my citizens to dress warmly today!" The crowd caused an uproar of laughter.
"That alone put the houndoom out of its own element, giving your pokemon an edge. Be it a battle or a contest you will go far." Her smile faded.
"However. Your pokemon missed a shot. Though it doesn't cost you that much in points, but it still is a deduction. As well as I did not sense you had full control over your pokemon the entire time. Maybe you can get away with luck in a trainer battle, but in a competition, there is not much room for mistakes. That is what defines a competition from a normal battle." The audience fell silent at her grave words.
"The events leading up to your ending however, are soon forgotten. I'm surprised you did not directly attack the houndoom with the mass of ice, but instead the glittering shrapnel took out the houndoom. While anti-climactic, it was unique. Excellent job Miss Eira."
This time, Akane felt compelled to give more than a shallow bow. She bowed and curtsied. It was well known when the queen bowed, her lower classed citizens would go wild with approval. When the queen straightened her body she had one last tidbit for Eira.
"It's not every day I get the pleasure to see an aurora."
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Eira flushed when Akane bowed to her, especially after such high words of praise. To have the queen of this land give her such a sign of respect put Eira on edge, even if she was also a queen "I-I will do better next time! Spheal and I will amaze you even more with our next show!"
Eira clumsily bowed to Akane before hurrying off the field, knowing that she and her Pokemon had a lot to work on if they were to compete here again.
"Nice job," said Z, "You did quite well." He was impressed at how she used the battlefield to her advantage and it had given him some new ideas for his performance and he was going through them in his head. "Ax Axew" said Axew to spheal *You were a sliding ball!*
"Ax Ax Axew" *It was cool! You can slide and roll!" Z smiled, "it will be hard to beat that act. I'll have to try extra hard." Z glanced at Axew and was happy that he was making a firend.
"Spheal spheal eal," Spheal excitedly, clapping his little paws on his belly. *You should come visit and I'll teach you.*
"I'm sure Axew will have an easier time against a Houndoom than Spheal did," Eira reassured him with a smile, looking over to where her partner was chatting with the little Dragon type. "I'm glad they are all getting along so well."
"True," said Z, "but it all depends on how things go," Axew shook his head, "Xew Xew." *Sorry, I don't like the cold that much. I'm a Dragon.* "I'm glad Axew made a friend." said Z
Spheal gave Axew a pointed look. "Spheal spheal sphea spheal." *I'm an Ice type and I came here.*
"Spheal isn't normally around Pokemon his own size, so I think him being friends with Axew will be good for him," Eira said, smiling at Z. "You should try to come to Silvertree Village to see us. It's rare that I get to leave, but I would be happy to show you around if you come visit."
Axew chuckled, "Axew xew Xew Ax." *True. Maybe I'll visit if my trainer goes there.* "Maybe I will," said Z, "what is it like there? Why is it called silvertree?" Z smiled at how Axew was getting along with spheal.
Closing his eyes and rubbing the bridge of his nose, Marcus tried to separate his thoughts from his emotions, but was failing. He sat in the corner not knowing whether to cry or to punch something. Sofa rested his forehead on Marcus' trying to comfort him. "Vigoroth. Vig..." Sofa wrapped his arms around Marcus' neck and embraced his friend. "Thanks buddy. I don't know...I feel like I shouldn't be as upset as I am, I don't even know why I feel like this..."
Sofa stepped back and started talking in Pokemon on a long string of 'vig's and 'vigoroth's with a lot of claw gestures. "You know I don't speak Pokemon, I can't get what you're trying to say if it's too complicated." Sofa pointed a claw at Akane and then the houndooms. "The queen? What, do you have an idea for the contest? Alright...let's see if you can manage to tell me."
Sofa proceeded to pantomime with circles and claws traveling all around. "Okay...okay, I think I know what you're trying to say. How did you think of that? No offense, buddy, but you're not the smartest Pokemon in the league." Sofa just shrugged and waited for Marcus' response. "Nevermind, it doesn't matter. That's a good idea, we should do that. But how are gonna lead up to that, we can't exactly open with it can we..." A roar of applause drew Marcus' attention away from his performance and towards Eira's. He watched her and her Spheal in wonderment. She sure looks happy. That's good. By the end of her routine, Marcus was standing up and clapping with the rest of the audience.
Man is she lucky. She just goes out there without knowing what's going to happen and it all works out for her. That was awesome. That was beyond awesome. But now it's my turn and her little snow day just ruined any chance of us using Sofa's idea. Marcus eyed one of the houndooms for a few moments. Or maybe not...
"Okay, so we're going to stall, I need you to try and make it look as showy as possible until I give you the signal, then you...you know what? Let's just wing it. It'll be fine." Sofa stared dumbfounded at his trainer. "What? Do I always need a plan? Am I that predictable?" Sofa nodded profusely. "Get out there, will you? And remember, make sure to always put on a show."
- -
Marcus followed Sofa far behind him, stopping well out of the range of danger as his Pokemon went to the middle of the hall to meet the Houndoom waiting for him. The flame dog had learned from his predecessor's mistakes and decided to stay right where he was, with stable footing. Perfect.
"Ladies and Gentleman; since this is the first chance I've had to speak with you, I was a bit distracted last time, I would like to formally introduce my Pokemon as well as myself to you." The whole time Marcus was addressing the audience, Sofa was slowly circling the Houndoom just 10 feet from its snarling teeth, always making sure to be facing it and its very warm breath. Every now and then, the Houndoom would let out a flamethrower in an attempt to antagonize his enemy into getting close. With every release of flames, Sofa would just barely step out of the way with more grace than he looked possible of having, leaving the crowd to gasp in response.
"My newly evolved Vigoroth here is named Sofa. I," Marcus said as he bowed with as much gravitas that he could possibly muster, the audience gasping at another near miss, "Am Marcus Glyser. I would like to apologize for my unruly attire; I didn't know I going to be participating in a contest when I came to town today. You see," The audience gasped louder than normal; Sofa had slipped on the ice. The houndoom saw his chance and blew a billowing flame straight for the vulnerable Vigoroth, but Sofa used his forward momentum to roll out of the way; a sigh of relief was shared throughout the hall. "You see, I am a Pokemon trainer, I have had no experience with contests before today except for knowing the rules for them and knowing that they exist." At this, Marcus let out a short chuckle. He glanced over to the two Pokemon, then down to the ground they were standing on. "So I hope you can forgive me and my Sofa for being a bit...unorthodox with our performance style, we're just trying to get used to it. I thank you for your attention. My father raised me to believe that you always introduce yourself formally whenever you can, because it is a sign of respect to both the person you're meeting and yourself." The houndoom started to think that he was getting nowhere with his attacks and he wasn't going to coax his opponent in, so he was getting anxious and felt like faring the slippery ice, but when he looked down at his feet, he realized that his flames had melted all of the cold substance around him. "So without further adieu, I give you...the cyclone." Marcus turned around with his arm held out to be as showy as possible as the battle truly began.
Filled with excitement at the prospect of catching that annoying Vigoroth and finally burning him to get him to stop dancing around, he started his dash for Sofa. "Sofa! Toy with him a bit more! Sucker punch!" When the Houndoom got within range and was breathing in for his flamethrower, Sofa suddenly squared off on the dog and burst forward with a sudden flash of speed. Right when he was going to release his flame, Sofa brought his arm down as he ran past and knocked the front legs out from under him. The flames burst out and crashed against the floor, creating a cascade of fire like a river running from houndoom's mouth. He stood back up clearly much more annoyed than he was earlier, his snout twisted with rage and pain from smacking into the ground. He charged up again, this time focusing his flame to a controlled burst.
"Once again! Sucker Punch!!" Right when the houndoom was about let loose his inferno, Sofa rushed in with another burst of speed, this time getting very close to the ground and bringing his claw up into the houndoom's chin in an uppercut before running past again, forcing the flamethrower to shoot up into the air like a fountain made of fire. This time, Sofa stood on the other side of the hall, closest to the audience, just standing there with his arms crossed.
"Alright Sofa," Marcus paused and looked at the audience, letting out a small smirk. "just stand there." The houndoom shook his head, clearly not hurt, but visibly furious to everyone in the hall. He sprinted full speed at Sofa, not caring what possible plan those two might have, going for blood. As he got closer and closer, the audience began to stiffen as both trainer and pokemon remained unmoving. The Houndoom stopped within touching distance to Sofa, still no reaction. He then began to breath in deep, deep, deep for a final flamethrower that would let out everything he had. The whole audience sat on the edge of their seats. Right before Houndoom reached the limit of its lungs, Marcus called out, "Alright buddy, you know what to do! Aerial Ace!"
Sofa took off like a rocket right as the flames blasted from the houndoom's mouth, having much more speed then he could have gathered as a Slakoth, sprinting around the houndoom until he became a blur with his right arm out along his side pointing forward as if to cut through the wind, the clear aura trailing behind him like he were a comet. As he ran around in circles, the flames bent to the wind current generated by Sofa's high speeds, curling them up and over the two Pokemon. The Houndoom showed no signs of stopping, made blind with rage, he poured every last bit of fire he could from his chest. As Sofa sped up more and more, the flames started to rise higher and higher, the aura started to blend with his enemy's attack, and right as the flame reached its peak; Houndoom was reaching its limit.
Marcus raised his voice to be heard over the winds his partner was creating, "Okay, Sofa; wanna show them again? Y'all might recognize this move from earlier." Sofa jumped up, only getting a few inches of air, his feet glowing a dull orange. "He may not be the best jumper," Curling his body up into a ready position, Sofa used Mega Kick on the ground, propelling himself up above the towering inferno, spinning around it with his built up momentum by twirling around with his arms outstretched. "but he still has very strong legs."
Right as the flames stopped dripping from Houndoom's mouth, the winds subsided and the fires leveled out underneath Sofa almost into a doughnut shape; all that was missing was the hole. "Alright, Sofa; let's bring this home! RETURN!" Sofa closed his eyes: thoughts of all the times Marcus carried him through the woods, all of the naps; the summer days spent sitting out in the sun; the day after Marcus' mother's death and how he didn't sleep at all for over 30 hours just to comfort his friend; just a little while ago when Sofa evolved and their embrace afterwards, it all flashed across his mind. Sofa opened his eyes as he was falling, a few feet from the flames. He brought his right claw out in front of him as he fell through the hole that was now opening for his descent. Once he was through, Sofa pulled his claw in as he did a front flip right before coming down on the houndoom, one claw down hitting the ground to brace his fall as he brought one knee into his opponent, one knee pointing up, his face looking down and body towards the queen.
Slowly, Sofa lifted his head as Marcus came to join him in the front of the performance area. How did that work so well? Come on man, take your own advice. Act like you've been there. "Once again, ladies and gentleman," Sofa stood up and stepped away from the Houndoom. "I thank you for your time." Both trainer and Pokemon bowed at the same time.
