Astina fiddled with her robes as she was waiting for their nightly meal ceremony to begin, Quartz and Ruby floating around her and watching her so they could immediately take advantage of her free hands when she was done. She was worried about the ceremony tonight since this was the first time she and Hania would be conducting it themselves and without help from their mentors. She couldn't help but to feel a bit of excitement to be leading her people in this important ceremony though, even with her nerves creating strange bubbles in her stomach that was sending odd chills through her system. The only thought now coming to her was a question of where her partner was? He wasn't typically late for these kinds of things, but it wasn't unheard of for him to be found with his nose in one of the old legends in their dwelling.
He couldn't believe he was running late, that book he had been reading was just too good to put down though. Speeding up slightly, he made his way to where the ceremony he was late for was to be held. Behind him, Elsha giggled at his distress, while Artair fumbled along behind him trying to keep up with him with on his short legs. Realizing this, Hania turned around and quickly picked up the bear-like Pokemon with a small concerned frown. "I'm sorry Artair. I keep forgetting you can't walk as fast as I can." He apologized while Artair vigorously shook his head. A small smile crossed Hania's face briefly before falling away the closer he got to his destination.
As soon as he arrived, he placed Artair down and shushed Elsha, who had continued her giggling the whole time they had been walking. Spotting Astina, he walked over to her and bowed his head slightly. "My apologies for being late." He said, his voice a mix between warm and cool, something he was still trying to work on around the girl. It wouldn't help if he was as cold as he was to others with her.
Astina couldn't help but to sigh in relief at the sight of the younger priest, knowing full well that the ceremony was supposed to start soon with or without him. She bowed in greeting to him and didn't let it show when his harsh tone rattled her a little bit. Sometimes she wondered what it was about him that the previous priest had seen that made him choose Hania of all people as the next Priest of Darkrai.
"I accept your apology," she said quickly before motioning for her Pokemon to move away from her, giving a warm smile at Hania that she hoped would show confidence she did not feel. "Are you ready to get started?"
The question was valid. Was he ready to start the ceremony? Was he ready to be one of the ones to take it over completely? He really didn't have the time to contemplate that question. "Even if I was not, I need to be." That was the only response that Hania could think of. From beside him Artair made a couple of sounds of wanting attention, having gotten used to the nicer side of Hania, and not the one he showed to the rest of the world. Looking down Hania gave the Cubchoo a small frown. "Not now Artair. You know how important my position is. I need to perform a ceremony now." He said, internally cringing at how cold he sounded to the Pokemon he had come to see as one of his only friends. Elsha floated down to the Cubchoo as the other Pokemon gave Hania a surprised look towards the response he was given. Giving a sigh he gave the Pokemon a secret apologetic look he muttered a quick, "just wait until we get back to our tent", before looking back at Astina with his normal expression and tone back in place. "Shall we go?"
"Yes!" Astina said excitedly, no longer worried about the ceremony now that she had her fellow priest to do it with her. She had been unsure of herself just moments before, but now, as she stepped out to address her people, she was radiating confidence as the ceremony began. It was a simple ceremony since it was one done each night before they began their nightly meal, but it was an important one that sent up their prayer of thanks to the ones that protected and guided them in this life. Nothing abnormal had happened that day, like someone giving birth, which had not happened in a few years at this point, or someone passing on, so a simple prayer of thanks was all that was needed this night.
"Thank Cresselia nothing went wrong," Astina murmured as she sat down in her place at one of the few small table their tribe had that were designed for the important members, like elders and the priest and priestess, to eat more comfortably. Here, her Pokemon joined her again so they could share in the berries that had been gathered for the meal.
There was great truths in that statement. Both Astina and himself had made it through the ritual without a single mistake. For that he was extremely grateful. "The Lord and Lady must have known we were nervous and shed their light on us to give us faith that we knew what we are doing." He commented, voice a little softer than normal as he handed a couple of berries to Artair. He always felt that his nicer side was more prominent after he participate in the rituals he was taught. Though this was a fact he would quickly deny later with a much stronger return of his more anti-social nature. Elsha gave a small giggle as she swooped down and took her share of the berries from his plate. "Elsha what have I said about giggling at the dinner table?" This was said in a jokingly kind manner, as though no one else was at the table. Elsha merely giggled again in response.
Astina couldn't help but to smile as she took a bite of one of the plump berries that she had been served, her Pokemon being much pikier that her as they chose their own dinners from her serving. That was the one thing that she knew about Hania that no one else seemed to know, he was actually very different towards his Pokemon partners than he was to humans. She couldn't help but to agree that the Pokemon that choose to be their partners bring out the best in everyone and were worth the strain on resources that their tribe experienced whenever someone gained another companion, but not many agreed with her on that except for, at least she believed, Hania did. It did help that Ruby always seemed to enjoy Elsha's company since they were both fun loving ghosts.
"I feel like we have been blessed tonight," Astina murmured as she leaned back to look towards the sky above them where her Lord and Lady looked down on them. The sky was illuminated brightly by Lord Darkrai's moon and Lady Cresselia's stars that night, which only made her feel more strongly that this was a blessed night. "I feel like the Lord and Lady are trying to speak with us with such a perfect night."
He didn't really want to say it aloud, but he couldn't agree more with his fellow priest, so instead he just nodded and went back to feeding Artair. No matter how much he knew he needed to get along with the other, no matter how many times he tried to be nice, he always seemed to never get past the internalized need to shut down. Reaching out, he also took some of the berries and ate a few himself, quickly using that as a reason for not saying anything.
Elsha, upon seeing how her partner had closed himself off again puffed out her cheeks and frowned. Why was he always like this? One minute he was normal, and the next he was being distant. Looking between him and Astina, she tried to figure out what was going on, and as usually came up with nothing. Deciding that she didn't like that, she swooped down once more towards her partner's plate to take more berries, a loud giggle escaping her as she did so. Then a hand appeared over the plate and made her look up to see a small amused smile on her partner's face. That was much better. "If you take anymore, what am I to eat?" He questioned making her giggle again. Now that was better.
Astina glanced over at Hania with a small smile now that he was interacting with one of his companions, motioning for Ruby to go ahead and join her trickster of a friend so they could share the joy that everyone seemed to be feeling that night. Ruby quickly floated over to the other ghost Pokemon with a shrill call that sounded like a haunted laugh, wanting nothing more than to play with her fellow ghost since Quartz did nothing but sleep all day and night in their human's grasp. Astina made sure to look away from Ruby in case Hani grew upset at her, failing to notice that Ruby out right tackled the Shuppet in her eagerness to play.
Elsha, who was not expecting the sudden action from her friend, let out a sharp half-giggle, half-yelp. This was met with a confused look from her trainer and then a small scoffing laughing and a half-smile. “Ruby, perhaps you should have warned Elsha before you pounced her. She could have accidentally shot off a shadow ball towards you.” This was the only verbal response given by Hania as he turned his attention back to his food. Taking a bite of a berry, he gave the rest of it to Artair, before continuing to do the same thing multiple more times.
