Rubble crunched under Aidan’s foot. He climbed up the side of a hill, shifting his weight cautiously as he moved over the newly unstable ground. He stopped with a sigh to look at the scenery. There were cracks in the cave entrance and clear impact marks in the ground. There was singe marks on a lot of the grass nearby, and Aidan wondered how close they had come to starting a wildfire.
“They really tore the place up, didn’t they?”
Perhaps that was an exaggeration. Judging from the marks, the battle had been intense but short, and Aidan guessed that most of the struggle had not left a mark. He knew that the Queen’s power lay not in strength of arms, but in her commanding personality and her own personal brand of diplomacy.
However the battle had gone, the cave lay scarred but fully intact and enticingly empty. It was probably too much to hope that Moltres was gone for good, but the cave was deep and vast. Aidan was quite sure that it wouldn’t be too hard to get a share of the place, whether by bartering, stealth or even coercion if it proved necessary. He wasn’t strong enough to force Orinda’s Beast to give up its own nest entirely, but he would grow. Eventually he planned to expand into the surrounding area and perhaps even claim the entire mountain.
Aidan really wanted this area for himself. The mountain had a mystique to it that really fit with his style of living and of fighting. It looked rugged and untamed, and made one think of raw power. That was exactly what he wanted people to think when the saw him. It was as though the mountain was calling out to him, and damned if he wasn’t going to answer.
