History:
The city of Railnor Harbour, located on the largest of the Venoys Islands, began as a single trading post established by an independent exploration looking for tradable resources. Iron was discovered on the island soon after and several merchants began arriving on the island. One of these was a prospective merchant named Dafydd L’ Aquin from the Kanto region. Following his arrival, he established a fishing business based on the wealthy populations of fish and sea-life that lived around the islands. Most merchants arriving on the islands were focused on the then lucrative mining and shipping trades, so there was little competition for the L’ Aquin enterprise.
After several years on the island, the merchant families began to talk of forming a government to rule over the islands and keep other mainland countries from trying to take the wealth they had discovered. The first meeting of merchants agreed to show the world their unity by building a grand council hall for all of the merchants to meet. Dafydd L’ Aquin took much of the costs of construction in labor and materials upon himself. The other merchants were glad to let him do this as it meant less money that they had to spend on the project. After seven months of construction, the meeting hall was completed, and the first official meeting was held.
The council formed the Merchant Republic of Venoys. Dafydd L’ Aquin proposed one of the first laws in the country, that the individual who put forth the most money into a project was the owner of that project. Since this protected the merchants’ assets and trade networks, it was passed. With the law in place, Dafydd went into motion to become ruler of the island. After years of saving money, Dafydd began to buy the assets of competitive merchants. After four years, there were only five merchant families left on the island. The last four merchant families were opposed to the L’ Aquin family and Dafydd’s movements for power. Two merchant families decided to unify together in an attempt to curb the L’ Aquin family’s power. This merchant coalition demanded that Dafydd L’ Aquin surrender all of his assets to the coalition. In an attempt to force this, the coalition blockaded Railnor Harbour until Dafydd capitulated. Dafydd gathered the other two merchant families and convinced them that this blockade was an attempt by the coalition to seize all the assets on the islands and drive the other three families out.
The L’ Aquin family and the two remaining families formed the triumvirate coalition break the duel-coalition blockade of Railnor Harbour. The two sides met in a naval battle to break the blockade. After six hours, the blockade was breached and the duel-coalition lifted the blockade of Railnor Harbor. This battle began the two year civil war between both coalitions. The L’ Aquin family and the triumvirate coalition were victorious and drove the duel-coalition families from the islands. The wars end left Dafydd L’ Aquin and his family as de facto ruler and in control of the islands. With power over the islands secured, Dafydd set himself up as the head of the Merchant Republic of Venoys.
