"I-it's okay, Maleko," Maya said, not as confident as her words might have suggested. "I've never encountered something quite like this... My senses are... off but... Yes!" She said suddenly, realization pinging in her head. "If the temple is the source of all this then purifying it should get rid of the barrier. But..." The aura surrounding this place... it was almost sickening... in fact it probably was sickening she realized again, recalling some of the training. "An energy like this, this powerful and tainted, is not good for humans or Pokemon. That explains why the Pokemon and humans are so... impacted I guess is the word?" Dororo nodded as if in agreement. If they stayed here to long they might end up in the same state.

The old man's eyes widened. "Y-you are a spiritualist? A priestess?" The man questioned feverishly.

Maya hesitated but nodded finally.

"Of course! You are the spitting image of the other priestess who came to try and help us!"

Maya's mouth fell open. "Other..." Her aunt! She had come through here to try and help these people? she was on the right track! "Yes! Yes! She is my aunt! Where is she?"

"Sadly she left about two weeks ago. Using her spiritual powers she was able to pry open a hole in the force field long enough for her to slip through... She told us she would go off and find something to help purify this place. Just her power was unable to banish this evil..."

She slumped slightly. If her aunt couldn't do it then Maya certainly couldn't. She was young and inexperienced. But... "Maleko I think I can get us out."

Did he hear that right? Maya was a spiritualist? And he hadn’t noticed it? All he could do was shift his attention between the man and Maya as they conversed, lost and in shock about what he had learned. So maybe his idea hadn’t been so crazy to mention after all? Or maybe it was crazy. With the way Maya seemed to be acting about the topic he wasn’t sure, though she did seem to have a moment where she had an epiphany after hearing it... thus leading the man to have the conversation with her in the first place. It wasn’t until he heard his name that he realized that he was now being brought back into the conversation, though the words spoken after his name he wasn’t too sure about… but he needed to trust in them. “If you t-think you can Maya, I t-trust you.”

Maya blinked is surprised to hear that. This boy that she had just met, and now clearly knew what she was, was trusting her? Her abilities? She hardly had any trust in her own abilities but it was probably not wise to tell him that.

"So you will help us then?" The old man said hopefully. Maya could see other wan and haggard faced people peering out from crumbling buildings and dead trees.

"I-I'm very sorry. But if my aunt could not do it then it is very unlikely that I will be able to," she bowed deeply. "I'm s-sorry." She hoped her legs weren't trembling as hard she felt they were. She hoped only she could noticed the jitter and faint chatter of her teeth. Truthfully she was downright terrified. Whatever was in that temple... whatever was impacting this place was a pressure of intent and horrible power that Maya could feel dampening her senses while at the same time trying to tear into them. It threatened to rip and tear at her mind. Whatever this was... it was trying to intimidate her... and it was working.

The old moved forward and made as if to grab at her but Dororo instantly blocked with way with a warning croak and narrowed eyes.

"Please! We need your help!" The old man cried. "I beg of you! Please help us! We will give you anything!" The man was near hysterics and Maya could only stare at him in open horror as she took a step back. She couldn't do ANYTHING. She felt like she was suffocating.

"I-I'm sorry! I-I promise I will come back! I will bring my aunt and she will help you! I promise!" With that Maya couldn't stand to stay and turned tail and ran. Dororo motioned for Maleko to follow after the fleeing girl.

Well this was a plot twist. Following the direction of Maya’s Pokemon, Maleko found himself chasing after the retreating girl wondering just what had happened in the past couple of milliseconds he had missed that lead up to this sudden retreat. Shard held onto his trainer’s neck with his eyes wide open with surprise at the sudden retreat as well. “Maya, w-wait! Where are w-we going to go?” This was shouted with so much confusion laced in it that Maleko was sure his voice couldn’t be heard fully forming the words. Shard hissed out his agreement with the call as well, trying to back up his trainer.

She didn't stop till she came to the border, where this place was cut off from the rest of the world. Her run turned into a trot before tapering off into a lumbering exhausted shuffle. Gasping, more from the overwhelming feelings in her chest then her lack of athleticism, she bent over, hands gripping her knees in order to catch her breath. Dororo gently rubbed a webbed slightly damp hand over her back.

"I'm fine," Maya insisted, without any kind of conviction or believability in her voice. "I'm fine," she repeated, more to herself than anything. She wouldn't be fine till she got out of here. And she would be able to if her hands would stop shaking.

Almost distantly she heard Maleko and she straightened herself. "S-sorry," she said, hopefully loud enough.

Dang Maya could run fast! He could barely keep up with her at his best pace. Thankfully though, it seems she had heard his calling out to her, and he could use her call back to locate how far away he was from where she was. It took a while, but he too, finally reached the border of the village and, panting, looked at the girl he had just run after.

“W-What was that about? You not only r-ran away, b-but you left me behind as w-well…” He tried to stand up straight after that, having slumped over to try and catch his breath. Shard was still hanging onto his neck for dear life during the whole thing. Noticing this, Maleko gave his partner a brief apologetic look, before setting his attention back to the woman in front of him.

"S-sorry," Maya said, sniffling loudly and her vision going watery. She quickly wiped at her eyes. "The thing here... I... I can't help. I can't do anything about it. Whatever this thing is... I'm... too weak. Sorry... I kinda dragged a random stranger into this didn't I?" She gave a rueful laugh. "Didn't mean to leave you behind Maleko..."

Dororo made a concerned croak and then turned and gave an apologetic bow to Maleko and Shard.

Maya turned toward the boy. "I'm sorry I left you. I... think I can help you get out though. If you'll just bear with me and if spiritual voodoo doesn't weird you out?" She hated how thick and coarse her voice sounded.

Weird him out? If this type of thing weirded him out, he probably wouldn’t have followed after the woman in front of him. “I d-don’t care that you c-can use spiritual stuff. T-That’s actually really cool. And you s-shouldn’t be so hard on yourself.” Shard nodded along with this statement. “Plus, if you c-can get us out of h-here, then it should be o-okay right?”

Shard gave a small hiss of agreement to that, a small encouraging light shining in his eyes. After all, he was also part of this, and if he could help the woman in front of them feel any better, he should try and do so. Maleko gave his partner and friend a small smile at this. “See? E-Even Shard agrees with me on this.” He hoped this was what was needed in order to cheer Maya up, especially since he didn’t like the fact she was blaming herself for him following her, even though he did so by his own free will.

Maya bit her lip and nervously rubbed at her arms, fabric rubbing against the paper seals pasted onto her skin. "Thank you. I think I can do it... I just..." She shrugged her backpack off and knelt on the ground, fishing around in it for somethings. She brought her hand out, a bunch of seals clenched in her fist. In another hand she carefully unearthed a few long, sharp needles about the size of a pencil.

"... The second its open you have to run through okay? I'm not sure how long it will stay."

She approached the strange barrier, hands still a little shaky as she brought a paper seal up over her head. She felt an electric crackle go up her arm as she invoked the charm and she slapped it onto the barrier. She felt the barrier try and resist but the paper stuck, strange writing and ink bursting into life. She had to go quick or else the barrier would eat up the power. Maya jammed a needle into the seal and with practiced speed she inserted five more in an arch with the paper seal at the top. The needles glowed and sparked, and thin light connected the needles like connect the dots. The barrier shuddered as the holy charms and needles sliced a door open in the strange energy. It worked!

"Maleko go!"

He didn’t think after that command was given, he ran. Shard ending up having to cling for dear life to his neck as he headed towards the now opened hole. “Sorry b-buddy….” He couldn’t help but apologize to the Snivy who hissed back at him as his way of telling him to pay attention to what he was doing. The closer they got to the hole in the barrier they got, the more power he shoved into his legs in hopes of getting through it. Finally, before he was ready, he reached the hole and made his way through it, almost tripping as he did so. Moving further away from the barrier, he turned around and skidded to a stop. “Maya, I’m t-through! You’re t-turn!” This was called out as strongly as he could manage with the adrenaline had no more use for all seemed to leave him at once, as he landed in a sitting position on the ground against his internal will.

Maya felt like someone was trying to cleave her head in half. She had seen others open holes in barriers, pulling back layers of energy with their own power and will. It seemed like it was quiet a strain but this physically hurt. The seals on her arms felt like they were physically on fire, and it occurred to her only now that she should have removed a few if she was going to attempt fighting something so strong. At the same time it was dangerous to remove them so... what was the middle ground? It was like she was fighting this energy and it had her on the ropes. The sealing needles crackled and shuddered.

Distantly she heard Maleko call from the other side and felt a rush of relief. Using that emotion she grit her teeth and stumbled forward. Dororo supported her by the elbow as they hurriedly shuffled through. The second both she and Dororo went through the barrier snapped the needles and closed. Maya sagged to the ground in relief. It felt as though she had been carrying a Onyx on her shoulders and it just grew wings and flew away.

"Y-you okay M-Maleko?" She gasped, her cheek resting in dirt and grass tickling her face.

They had both made it out of the village. Thank goodness. Trying to catch his breath, he had to put answering Maya’s question on hold. Shard was trying to fan him from his shoulder, having already recovered from the shock of suddenly having to hold onto his neck as he was running. The effort of the Snivy was appreciated, but it wasn’t actually helping any. He wouldn’t tell his friend that though as the other seemed to be intent on trying to help him out in whatever way he could. Finally, after what seemed like forever, he felt like he had a sufficient amount of oxygen in his lungs to answer Maya’s question about his well-being. “Y-Yeah, Maya, I’m okay. A-Are you alright?” The answered seemed to be breathless still, making him aware that he probably should have waited a little longer before answering. That’s what he got for thinking that he had a stable amount of oxygen going into his lungs.

Shard on the other hand, finally hoped off of his shoulder to go and stand next to the only other Pokemon in their small group. *Do you think we should make our trainers make camp here? They seem to be too tired to do much of anything at the moment, and it will start getting dark soon.*

Maya pressed her forehead into the dirt finding it oddly cool and the earthy smell grounded her and cleared some of her head. Dororo was hesitantly patting her on the back in concern.

"I'll be fine," she mumbled, taking a deep breath. "Just gotta... rest..." Her eyelids felt heavy and tired and she wondered if she could just lay here and sleep the rest of the day away.

*I believe that would be agreeable,* Dororo croaked in reply to Shard. *Her... talents often drain her so we likely would not get very far anyway.* He got down low and hooked one limp arm over his back and helped Maya stand. Her legs teetered dangerously but he quickly sat her down on the ground where there was minimal grass.
