"Come on dad, please." He knew he was not making the situation any better by doing this, but he had to try. "Maleko, we have been over this before boy," his father said with a sigh of exhaustion, "you are not going out there on your own. I refuse to lose you like we lost-...." "Dad, we promised to not t-talk about mom if it was about losing her." Maleko said, stopping his father mid-way through his sentence. "You're right. I'm sorry." There was a pause after that. "Tell me something Mal... why do you want to leave so badly? Aren't you happy here? You always seem to enjoy working in the fields."
"I want to save this village dad! I don't want to lose the one place that... you know what... never mind." "No... what is it?" Maleko shook his head. "Tell me son." His father moved from the chair he had claimed at the beginning of their conversation to place a hand on his shoulder. "I don't want to move dad. I heard the t-talks about packing up and leaving after the last harvest before winter. I want us to stay... I want us to stay and show other people that sometimes simple is the way to go. I want to set up a g-gym that will drag people from all over to here so that they can get a taste of what our life is like. It will make the elders reconsider moving and make this place our permanent home. I don't want to lose mom!" Maleko relented after another pause in conversation.
His father let out another exhausted sigh. "Why have you never told me this? All you have ever asked was if I would let you leave. You've never told me the reason why you wanted to leave." "Because I t-thought you would never listen...." Maleko confessed looking up from where his eyes had been trained on the floor so that they met his father's gaze. His father seemed to have unshed tears in his eyes. "You are very much like your mother... she was stubborn when it came to what she felt was right too." The words pierced Maleko's heart with both a small amount of sadness, but a larger amount of pride.
"Does that mean....?" He began cautiously. "Go ahead and go. But you come visit whenever possible you hear? You are staying in contact." His father said patting his shoulder again before pulling him into a hug. Maleko smiled shakily and returned the hug, tears forming in his eyes. "Thank you dad. I promise, I will keep in t-touch." That being said, Maleko ended the hug and got up from the chair he had been in the whole time. With a smile to his dad, he made his way over to the part of the tent he had blocked off as his corner. There his Snivy, Shard, was rested on his pillow with a worried look, as though he was waiting for the results of the conversation. Maleko walked over at sat down on the sleeping bag that was his bed. "He said yes. Shard, we actually are going to b-be able to to go and travel." He told his friend, whose eyes lit up. The Snivy made his way over to him and snuggled his side happily. "That's right... we can now save our h-home."
