Mariko could not remember the last time she had a break. Her clinic was coming along nicely, and many people were passing through it's doors on a normal day. Today, however, she had asked one of her neighbors, whom she had come to trust, to watch it for the day and had left Celeste with them so that if she was needed greatly she would be notified. Now she was seated in the Tea House she had heard so much about enjoying a nice soothing cup of tea. It had been a long time since she had had a good cup of green tea that she, herself, had not brewed but this cup of tea was high on the list. She was also glad that she was able to wear her Kimono outside of the house, having been afraid that it would collect dust with how rarely she had been able to wear it recently. If she had to take a guess, it would be that some of her habits from the past just refused to go away, no matter how long she had been away from home.
"So this is Enya." His eyes shifted around wide with excitement. "Snivy" Shard commented from beside him in agreement. Maleko looked down at him with a smile. "There is a t-tea shop over there. Shall we g-go take a look?" Shard gave a couple of nods in agreement and motioned to Maleko's shoulder as though he wanted to ride on it. Maleko smiled wider and lowered himself to the level of his friend. Shard gave a couple of happy jumps in place before he took his place on the offered shoulder. Once Shard was situated, Maleko stood up slowly and made his way into the building.
Once inside, he immediately felt overwhelmed by everything he was seeing. This amount of people was something he was not used too. "O-okay... this is different." Shard gave a sound of agreement, but continued to look around in excitement. The Snivy then pointed, in it's own way, towards a table not to far away. Maleko looked at the table and nodded. It was empty and farther away from the door. It was the perfect place to sit and observe the patrons in the shop. "Good boy Shard."
Mariko looked up from her tea when she noticed the table near her's was suddenly being approached by a boy who was, at most, maybe ten. He was talking to a Pokemon that looked to be a Snivy, something she had only heard about but never seen in person, having only seen a picture. It also seemed that the two of them were not used to large amounts of people as both seemed be tucked into themselves. Just as she was about to say something, she changed her mind and decided to watch for now. If the boy needed help then she would step in. Right now, however, he seemed to know what he wanted to do.
Okay, so maybe he really did not know what he was doing. While he was making his way towards the table Shard had pointed out, he had ended up almost walking into a man sitting at the table before. Luckily for him the man seemed to notice his plight when it came to walking and moved forward just enough for him to pass by. Making his way to the table safely, he sat down and pulled the bag he had brought with him closer to check on his money amount.
"I think we have enough for a cup of tea and a snack." Shard did a small dance at that information. Maleko smiled at the Snivy in return and pulled out his money holder. He had learned rather quickly when he started his journey that he had to be cautious with how much he spent at any given time. As he counted out how much he believed would be needed, after looking at the menu, Shard took to looking around once more. He was by nature a curious soul and he took any opportunity since he and Maleko had started traveling to take in the sites. One thing that caught the Pokemon's eye was the fact that at the nearby table was a woman seemingly watching the two, though it seemed like she was about to go back to her tea.
Giving a small call to draw Maleko's attention, he made to alert his friend to the woman. She didn't seem dangerous, but it was a better safe than sorry situation.
When the boy made it to the table safely, Mariko decided it would be fine to turn her attention away from the boy. It was at that point that she also felt the part of her Kimono that she had not tucked under her legs shift. Turning her attention away from her tea, she lifted the small amount of material to revel the newest addition to her Pokemon companions. The tiny Smoochum had been given to her recently due to the fact that the owner of the Jynx who mothered it couldn't keep it. Honestly she wasn't sure what made the man leave the barely hatched Pokemon with her, but she was not heartless enough to let it stay on it's own. Picking the little one up, she began to shush it so it wouldn't disturb the other customers while whispering to it in a soft, comforting voice. It wasn't until she heard the Snivy give a call, that she knew she was most likely going to be entered into a conversation.
Upon hearing Shard's call Maleko looked away from his money to the Snivy. He was not sure what his friend was trying to warn about. Looking over at where his friend was looking he was met with the scene of a woman comforting a Smoochum.
"What is it? She d-doesn't seem to be paying attention to us. Is it the baby Pokemon? Are you interested in it?" He couldn't be more confused as to why his friend seemed so uptight. "Snivy...!" "W-Watching? She was w-watching us? Probably because she was curious. P-People do stuff like that. Remember when I first brought you into the Village? We were w-watched for days. She's no threat. But I am curious about the baby Pokemon...." Shard seemed to gain a look of exasperation. "What? I h-haven't played a prank on anyone in a while!" The look changed to one of understanding. Maleko gave his friend a sly smile before changing it to one of innocents.
Mariko looked up from the Smoochum in her arms when she heard the boy she had been watching, mostly to make sure he would be alright on his way to his chosen table, spoke. "Yes, what is it?" She asked slightly tilting her head to match her tone. She wasn't sure why she would be wanting to talk. Maybe it was because of her watching to make sure he would be safe... Or maybe it was about Snowdrop (the name she had affectionately given the Smoochum) who was in her arms.
While she waited for the others response she turned her attention back to said Smoochum who was starting to fuss once again due to the stop in attention she was receiving.
Well he didn’t expect for her to be so willing to suddenly talk to him. Maleko internally snickered at the fact that she did though. Instead he turned his attention to the Smoochum in the woman’s hold like he was curious about it. “T-That’s a cute Smoochum.” Shard chimed in with a sound of confirmation, playing along. Maleko was surprised with how willing his friend was to help him with all this. Usually when he played a prank Shard wouldn’t play along. Then he saw the look on his friend’s face. Okay, he was not playing along, but that wasn’t going to deter him. In fact it made him almost giddy that he was going against what his friend. It was now becoming a battle of wills.
Mariko raised an eyebrow at the response she was given, having expected something else. Looking up from Snowdrop she gave a small nod of thanks for the compliment to the tiny Pokemon. “Thank you. Your Snivy looks quite healthy as well. You must be a great trainer for it.” She complimented back. She then sat and watched the two before him interacting once more. It seemed that the Snivy was disapproving of something his trainer had said. This confused her. Looking at the boy again, she slowly began to see the spark of mischief that danced there. So he was trying to play a trick on her was it? Well, she thought amused, I think I’ll play along for now. Then I’ll turn the prank on him. Maybe that will teach him better.
Okay... why did it seem like this woman was on to him? Maleko couldn't place his finger on it. Shard on the other hand, seemed to know what was going on and was giving him a knowing look like he was in on a joke. "What is that l-look for?" Shard merely gave a small shrug. Then the rest of the woman's words kicked in. Right... he should pay more attention to those speaking.... "Yeah, Shard has always been g-good at staying healthy." Shard seemed to puff out from the compliment with pride. Great... now he was giving his Pokemon an ego. Why is trying to start a prank on this woman so difficult?! Seriously!
Mariko could not help but let out a small laugh at the boy's forming confusion, while she rocked Snowdrop slowly. "Maybe you shouldn't have given yourself away. Or let your Pokemon give you away." She said in order to let the poor boy in on the joke. "Plus, I have lived a little longer than you have. Do you really think I don't know a few tricks as well?" She couldn't really tell how old the boy really was, but she was guessing he was a little older than eight. Looking down, she noticed that Snowdrop was refusing to fall asleep. Instead the little Pokemon's eyes were trained on the Snivy in curiosity, while one of her tiny hands lightly grasping Mariko's Kimono. "What is it? Are you surprised to see another Pokemon?" She asked softly, a light hint of playfulness in her tone. Snowdrop barely looked up at her to confirm Mariko's suspicions before training her wide eyes back on the Snivy while tilting her head slightly.
Shard! Of course it was Shard. Looking over at the Snivy Maleko couldn't help but give him the stink eye. "Traitor...." Shard gives a smirk of accomplishment at the quip. However, the Snivy's attention is soon drawn to the Smoochum in the woman's arms, the scene giving the feel of a stare down. Knowing that it was pointless now to try and play a prank on the woman, Maleko grudgingly went with being polite. "I'm Maleko. I come f-from a village in the Eastern Plains. D-Don't ask for a name... it doesn't have one." The introduction was short and sweet. Why give anything else away when he didn't have information from the other party as of now? It just didn't seem fair to him if one side recieved more than the other.
Mariko smiled lightly at the introduction. "I'm Yamada Mariko. My first name is Mariko, for your understanding. I come from Ecruteak City in Johto." She reciprocated with her own introduction. In her arms, Snowdrop was flailing around trying to reach out towards the Snivy Maleko owned. "Snowdrop, stop that sweetie, you'll fall from my arms." Mariko chided looking down at the Smoochum. She knew it was just because the little one was curious, but that didn't mean that she should do something that could end with her being harmed. Snowdrop stopped to stare up at her for a while before deciding to settle into Mariko's arms and settle in for another nap. Giving a small sigh, Mariko looked back up at Maleko. "Pardon the interruption. Snowdrop is still getting used to seeing other Pokemon so she often acts out. As I was about to say before, though I never got the chance to, was that I own a clinic in Pyron."
So she was a doctor. That explained why she pointed out Shard's health. Looking at the Smoochum the woman, Mariko, had ask pardon for, he saw that it had fallen asleep. "It's fine. S-Since she is so little, it make s-sense that she would be curious." He couldn't help but say, though he noticed Shard seemed a little down from the fact he wasn't being studied anymore. Seriously, sometimes he never could understand what went through his best friends head. "So a clinic huh? Must be difficult. I w-want to be a gym leader. I had to beg my dad to let me start on this journey. I only had Shard to begin with... but I f-found another Pokemon while I was on my way here! D-Don't know why I would f-find a winter Deerling just off the b-boarder between Celosia and the Eastern Plains, but I did." This was said with a small amount of pride and the slightest bit of confusion left over by his find. Maybe it was because he had been playing his flute? He didn't know, and he wasn't about to say that thought to Mariko.
"It's not as difficult as you would believe, running a clinic. It's busy, and most of the time you are moving, but it is satisfying to see people who were sick get better, and Pokemon that were hurt heal." Mariko answered the question about the clinic being difficult. "And to want to be a gym leader... Well that is a big dream isn't it? What type of Gym do you wish to run?" This was said to the part about his dream. The rest she had nothing to really say to. Maleko seemed to be walking forward towards his dream, and to have to convince his father to let him go, he must have a reason for the dream to mean so much to him. "You must really love Grass Pokemon, a Snivy and a Deerling, both are rare around here. Is that your type of choice?" She was so curious as to what type of Pokemon favored. She, herself, favored flying types, be them mixed type or not. Something about watching the Pokemon move free through the air made her heart soar with them. Looking down at Snowdrop, she couldn't help but say that she was the exception, she was the ice/psychic Pokemon that warmed her heart and reminded her of how her sister used to be towards her. This was not something she would say out loud. No need to speak of her past around someone who probably would become bored sooner rather than later.
