The red woman was not ready for this… she had a dangerous road ahead. She would be gone for such a long time; she needed to appoint someone to take charge while she had to leave. She did not break eye contact with the setting sun, even when the man she summoned arrived. Her hair was down today; the auburn waves fell almost to the backs of her thighs. Not that one could tell that’s where it ended by the strapless dress she wore.

" My Queen, you have summoned me," he said as he came nearer to Lady Akane. With one hand on his sword and the other coming about his breast he quickly kneeled. His armor made no sound while he knelt, though the enameled plate armor he wore glowed emerald with the setting sun. He remained quiet, and his face showed no emotion, it was like stone.
"My Queen, you have summoned me." His voice, gruff, unfeeling; just like the body it belonged to.
Akane did not face him. Her eyes were still glued to the setting fiery orb. She swore she could hear the faintest clack when his knee hit the ground.
”No need to kneel, sir-er-Chazz.”
It was rare for her to stumble on words, but she finally turned to face him. She was right he had kneeled as he was trained to do many moons ago.
”Your new training begins today sir.” He had no prior briefing for this. What the red lady was about to assign him to do, had been nearly unheard of and completely unthinkable for her. Her expression was dark; a grave weight clenched its firm grasp on her heart.

He rose quickly brushing his cloak back behind him. The news struck him, "what could she be possibly meaning he thought to himself. He was battle hardened and even though he knew they were alone he would never drop his guard lest something would happen to Akane.
"My lady, before you begin we missed you in the war room for our weekly battle report", he said slowly walking toward Akane. "All borders are secure and we have pushed The Children of Astrapi back to. Although they are still a threat they have been contained for now. If you would give me a months leave I could easily take care of them for good, but based on the tone of this meeting, that is a no." He he let out a rare laugh.
A small smirk spread across her face, an expression only her guard could give her. They had known each other for a long time.
”We missed you? Don’t you mean you missed me?” Her smile turned cruel. Chazz went on. Always business, never personal anymore, she thought sadly to herself. Chazz asked for a month’s leave.
”Chazz, I would let you go do what you need to do of course, but now is not the time. I need to protect this kingdom just as much as you do.” She paused. ”Speaking of which pushing that group back, you’ve been doing such a fantastic job. But what I’m about to ask you requires you stop all operations on that matter.”
A sad expression returned to her.
”Chazz I’m asking you to take my place as king over the fiery nation.” Her expression was blank, and expecting.

For the first time in his life a cold chill ran down his spine. "What", he said, even if, for a moment, he was caught off guard he quickly regained form. "Why Arkane, why now," he said forgoing all mannerisms he was keen to always show. "Please, I am not king, I'm a soldier. I fight wars, defeat your enemies, "I belong out there with my men."
Knowing full well his protests made no difference, he firmly spoke, " I as Commander of your Royal Guard and Army cannot become King. You are the Queen Akane. I don't know why you must go, but I know I can't convince you otherwise. Please keep your Queenship, I will become Lord Commander or Lord Regent, but please do not leave your title." In a softer voice he said, "Even if you were to leave your title behind it wouldn't change my promise to you."
”You always take things so seriously. Of course I’ll keep my Queenship.” She laughed and a sweet smile was the product, but not her usual sweet smile of a mask. No. this one was real. The one she always held for him was real.
”Made you drop your guard!” She laughed again, but this time much more sweet and innocent; much like a child. He looked almost naked to her right now. But she could never keep her mask in front of him anyway. Her face went stern again.
”Chazz, I’m going away for a while. These raging storms will destroy the kingdom, even the island. I know the way to stop them, and only I can do this. I have found a team of people from around Asemon I trust to go with me on this venture. And while I’m gone I trust no one other but you.” Her voice went as soft as his did. ”You know I never heard you make that promise. I wouldn’t let myself hear it, and I won’t hear it now.”

Relief came across Chazz's face. He knew she saw him taken aback by the news, but even in his humiliation he spoke with his commanding voice, "A team, but what of your personal Guard, out there out on the road our enemies would take every chance to attack you. Akane take 4 of the guard at least, thats what we trained them for." His thoughts returned to protocol, well mostly. In any other situation it would be him at her side, and he smiled at the thought of anyone stupid enough to attack the two of them.
"This is your journey Akane I can't stop you, but protecting you is priority," he said as he turned toward the other end of the room. He looked back and in a softer voice, "Akane you alway pretended you didn't hear that promise, but Akane...", he he spoke with a rare kindness,"no matter where, no matter when."
”I can’t take anyone other than myself. The people I speak of, they are only invited, but I am strong I can handle them. But again, only I can finish this. It’s my job to put my life on the line for my people.” She turned away from him, her hair brushed over her shoulder. She faded when he spoke of protecting her. She refused to hear his promise so he would never be bound by it. She couldn’t let herself ensnare him like she did so many other people. If she did that, they would no longer be equal.
She laughed to herself. Where we ever equal? she mused. Yes. We were once. Before our little spar. Yes, we were equal then. She stared out the window at the setting sun once more.

"You mistake my duty for a lack of pride Akane," he quickly turn to her and stated. He stopped before he said anymore and in a mild manner he calmly spoke. "Hard headed as always, Akane," he laughed. "Go forth and fore fill this quest of yours, these risks you take are unnecessary, but you won't listen,' he smiled. "When your quest is over, and all is well, we shall perhaps have a round two. I still have that rock by the way,' he laughed. "Just remember if you ever want to see me in combat again, all you have to do is call," her challenge of his pride only strengthened his resolve. He knew to rule a kingdom he had to be the man he used to be, but this time with a little less swordplay and a little more charisma.
Akane made a sharp turn to face him; her voice was anything but calm.
”Risks that are unnecessary? I am the strongest warrior in this kingdom. It is also my job as queen to protect this kingdom. But you seem to have somehow forgotten my job.”
She moved close enough to kiss him, but her wrath only grew as she growled in his face.
”Chazz, I am about to face a creature of the abyss, a monster, far more powerful than anything I’ve ever been forced to face, and I have to do it alone all the while I don’t even know what it is, what I’m facing. That dark force that I have no idea what it is may drown me and my kingdom, and yet you’re lecturing me. Unnecessary you say? Well if I don’t do it, who will? And if it is not quelled it shall be the harbinger of my kingdom’s doom.”
The mere thought made her crumple before him. At least until he finished and she realized he was playing the royalty game. Pretty pretty words and sweet charismatic orchestras.
”I see. I have let my guard drop too far in front of you, Chazz. When I get back, I will take you down yet again; and put you in your place.” She laughed; but the pain was still clear.

He smiled, " Akane last time you yelled at me you had your sword drawn. I'm only trying to look out for you not just as your protector, but as your friend as well." He knew she was always hot tempered, but he always thought it was funny. The secret that he would sometimes push her buttons, would be taken to the grave. "Take me down you say?? Well maybe it will be winter and I can show you who the master of the ice is again." he got even closer Akane. " It might............even dazzle you," he pulled back away from her. "It's funny I've become so accustomed to be the one riding out and going on an adventure. Whether it would be destroying your enemies or some idiot champion of some neighboring land challenges me to a duel." His tone then changed his charismatic tone became sincere, "This time however I have to watch you go."
”You say you’re looking out for me as a friend, yet with me recently you’ve been nothing but business. It used to be you and I could finally leave the battle when we were together, but now I see, that is no long the case.” She wrapped her arms tight over her hurting chest. He continued speaking of another of their previous spars, before he leaned into her; again their faces so close she could feel his breath on her lips.
"It might...even dazzle you."
The red lady felt her heart stop for that fleeting moment. He pulled back away from her. She always hated when he used his charm, because it worked so easily on her.
"It's funny I've become so accustomed to be the one riding out and going on an adventure. Whether it be destroying your enemies, or some idiot champion of some neighboring land that challenges me to a duel." Sincerity overrode his charisma when he spoke once more. "This time however I have to watch you go."
Her heart that had been so open now turned cold like the firm tone she took.
”Well now you’ll see how it feels…” Her tone still cold, her pain masked. She was always envious. He got to be the one to go and explore and fight. But it also made her sad because she feared he would not return to her one day. She dreaded that day. Akane wanted to be the one to die first, so she wouldn’t have to bear the pain of his death, and the probable invasion after he passed.

”Well now you’ll see how it feels…”, the words as she spoke them, stung like venom. "How it feels? We both knew the risks every time I left, but it had to be done. You were as you are now too important to risk. Thats why I left, because one of us had to leave and we both know Im not a bloody diplomate" he laughed, but even in that you could hear his emotions.
He brushed back his hair he was quite frustrated with Akane. He stared at her, her hair caught fire with the setting sun. He knew her mood can shift, but this was different. He wanted to tell her, he wanted to say how he really felt. In all his years of service he wanted nothing more.
Sadly, he knew what he had to do. No matter how he felt he could not be what Akane wanted him to be. Now was not the time for that. What she needed was a loyal guardian to watch over the legacy he had helped her build. Roping in all his emotions he finally spoke, "My Queen if it is your will it shall be done. Go My Queen and for fill your quest, but return home. I will defend the kingdom in your stead."
Is that a tremble in his voice? Did he actually feel something? It was rare for him to show his emotions and he was one of the few people she could not easily read. She had turned away from him yet again, so she could not see him. She was afraid to. The air that separated them held a weight that stopped her predictions of his emotions. She could feel a tiny chip break off her already shattered heart when he spoke again.
"My Queen if it is your will it shall be done. Go My Queen and for fill your quest, but return home. I will defend the kingdom in your stead."
It was never a guarantee she would come back. Her only goal was to stop the catastrophe, not return in one piece.
” I’m not planning on dying but my only goal is to stop the rising storms, returning alive isn’t my highest priority. What would you be able to do to me if I don’t return?” her voice was mocking him, her mask now a cruel smile.
