His strides were long and determined as he emerged from his office. The security of the Republic had been breached. Everything that he had worked for this past decade was at risk now. The string of advisers following him all urged different courses of action heshould take. He ignored all of them as they bickered among themselves, he already knew what must be done anyway.
The double doors leading to the main palace hall swung open in front of him as the guards saluted him. The soldiers respected him more than any of their commanders now. The old guard who had won the civil war with Dafyyd had long passed away, now there was only these new officers. Their determination to impress was admirable at best. Dafyyd had secured his legacy throughout the Republic, the bringer of stability and peace. His faced furrowed with visible disgust as he imagined all of the vultures
circling his country. Trying each to prove their worth to him, to be worthy of owning just enough for their personal guards.
Dafyyd thought to himself,
"This is what our technology will do to the rest of the world. The kingdoms and slugs of these islands will all try to fight for them, arguing and struggling to prove each other lesser. This is where we see the true colors of our neighbors."
Dafyyd walked to his throne and sat down, facing the hall he had built before him. As soon as Dafyyd sat down the Captain of the Guard spoke to the audience in the hall.
"The High Officer has summoned an audience to address a breach of our Republic's security. All here are gathered to witness the trial of the accused, and provide testimony that it was free and fair."
When the captain had finished, the entrance doors opened and two guards entered, leading a man into the hall to face the audience gathered. The man was lead into the hall and was made to kneel before Dafyyd. As the man was placed before him, a guards flanked the man and stood facing Dafyyd. The Captain of the Guard spoke,
"This man, Petty Merchant Ferense D'Terros, has come before the council to face charges of treason, charges of betraying the Republic, and charges of pawning state secrets for personal monetary gain. He pleads not guilty to all of these charges. Witness accounts place this man in Eirlys for a merchant mission. Witness accounts claim this man traded away a military grade carbine for petty common goods. These accounts have been taken under oath, and verified by agents abroad, constitute enough evidence for the High Officer's sentence. He may pass justice with the consent of the court."
The Captain withdrew from the forefront and faced Dafyyd. The hall was deathly silent, and all eyes were on him as the audience awaited his decision.
"These crimes are grave, the evidence provided is enough for me to pass judgement with the consent of the audience. State crimes must be punished with determination to not only punish, but guarantee similar incidents never happen again. With the consent of the council I pass the sentence of death by 'the five nails' to be carried out in five days time. This will give the defendant time to present any new defensive evidence to the council."
Dafyyd checked the council for any sign of opposition to his decision. As always there was none. Dafyyd turned to head back out of the hallway, ignoring the screams and pleads of the merchant being dragged from the hall by the two guards. The wheels had been set in motion by this man, the screams of thousands could echo much louder than his in Dafyyd's mind. The hall doors slammed shut behind him.
