"That's the spirit. We'll depart now, before the heat of the day really sets in."
As the two men walked towards one of the hidden passages to the Underground, Zandrophin couldn't help but notice all the people watching them.
They've never seen him before...so their curious...it's nothing to be concerned about, Sir.
Still...I like to be prepared...I've done some questionable things around here, of late...
Finally, they arrived at one of the taverns in the city which served as a pathway to the right kind of people. Zandrophin walked up to the man behind the bar, and dropped four silver coins on the bar.
"Payment for passage across the river," he said in a hushed tone.
The man waved them over towards the back of the establishment. He motioned towards a younger man, who carried a sizable blade.
"He will be your boatman," the barkeep said as he returned to the front.
"Who's your friend, Chief?" the young man asked, "I ain't seen him around before."
"He's just a wanderer, Jocun...and he's with me. That should suffice."
"Right...well...sectors Delta and Gamma are down for repairs...had a small cave-in yesterday. Take the orange route."
"Thanks for the information." Zandrophin handed the man one silver coin.
Jocun leaned back on the crate he was standing near, and lazily pulled on the alcohol bottle near him. This bottle served as the trigger mechanism for a trapdoor leading down into the maze of tunnels which composed the Underground.
"Anytime, Chief...don't make too much of a mess."
The door closed behind the two men as they entered the caves.
"Alright...follow me."
As they walked, Mentus turned to face Marcus, blocking Zandrophin's perception so he could speak.
"Mister Gleyser...I know you are an explorer of sorts...I ask that you not take any mental notes of this route. There are many paths here...and we prefer them to remain undiscovered."
After 15 minutes of walking through the tunnels, the way opened up into a large room with an immensely high ceiling. People were rushing about, carrying on with their day, hardly paying the two men any notice. Thanks to a large amount of funding from the CTC, this cave was beginning to look somewhat civilized, with high marble columns, polished stone floors, and other such decorations. Zandrophin turned to face Marcus, extended his arms, and said,
"Welcome to the Underground: the crooked capital of Pyron City. We'll start looking for that archway here, in the main plaza. If we can find him, I'll ask Yanth, my main administrator for this area, about the symbol. You can't really miss him...just look for a dip in the crowd."
