The red woman stepped forward. She was in the mood to let loose in a battle. Today, she wore a simple but elegant fighting qipao. She had even brought her paperwork to finish up while she waited for a challenger. She slid open her desk drawer to reveal several metal moltres badges clinking as the container rolled back and forth. After feeling the newly shaped metal, she closed the drawer and returned to her paperwork about insuring her citizens after Lugia’s attack still to this day she was constantly receiving them.
I hope the gym leader returns one day. Yes. She had been asked to take over the registered fire gym many years ago. And only now had she finished the construction for it. Maybe, if she heard the original owner was dead, she would just give up and hand it over to someone; or perhaps, maybe not. She couldn’t tell for now.
Nicole thanked the person she had been talking to before she began to walk towards the building that stood just a little ways away from where she was currently. She had come to Celosia to talk to Akane about something, only to find that she was out, and that she was currently at the reopened Gym that Celosia had. At first she wasn't sure if she wanted to go, but she then decided that she could meet with the queen there... And maybe... Just maybe she would be able to battle her for the badge the Gym handed out.
She didn't mind the thought of going into a battle against the queen. In fact she thought it might be a little bit fun. And winning a badge would be a cool bonus. Sure, her battle with Z still haunted her slightly, but she was sure that she could get over that to have a go at battling her, maybe, kinda, not-really, possible ally? She still didn't know what the heck was going on with that.
When she finally reached the building, she walked up to the door, she cleared her throat and called out as loudly as she could: "Anyone here?"
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
After scribbling down another signature, she heard the distinct chime of a chingling bell coupled with a child-like voice. Passing off the paper to the finished pile, she quietly emerged from her reclusive room. She elegantly sauntered to the source of the call and replied with a simple,
”Present-Oh hello Nicole! So lovely to see you.” Her smile was one of her more gentle ones for she had grown rather fond of the rebellious nature of, as she called it, her shadow. ”How is the desert, Duchess Everfield?” She had to catch herself from being rude and calling the desert the wastes as they were so dubbed by Asemon locals. ”Anything shiny to be found?”
Celosia did like their shiny things, as demonstrated by the golden temple-like building the duo currently existed in. but the red lady continued, happy that she personally knew her first potential challenger, or is that not why you’re here today?” She calculated Nicole’s next motivation carefully, even though she usually could disrupt Akane’s predictions.

“Hello Akane. Nice to see you again as well.” Nicole greeted the woman cheerfully… Well as cheerfully as she dared. She still wasn’t sure how to deal with the others mood swings. “The Ridge is running smoothly. And please, use my first name and drop the title. My last name is only there for nostalgia and the title is too formal.” She said in following waving her hands in front of her as though she was trying to wave the two words away.
When the question about her finding anything shiny registered she gave a small nervous laugh and shook her head. “Not really. No shiny things as of yet. I did find a fossil though. I awakened somehow as well. Maybe I’ll introduce you to Phoenix sometime.” She answered before turning slightly more serious. “I actually was coming here to talk to you about stuff pertaining to my contest hall and some of the things we never fully ironed out… But then I heard something interesting. How would you feel about a friendly gym battle first? Business can always wait in the face of some friendly competition right?” She asked giving a small innocent smile, though a flame could be seen in her eyes, one that symbolized the excitement she was feeling about possibly seeing her maybe ally’s strength.
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
The red lady couldn't have been more pleased to have an excuse to get out of more paperwork and business. Finally, someone who just wants a break away from life. Akane couldn't have been happier to escape the real world in the substitution for one battling always provided. She had recently been given an eevee with the most unusual shimmer and today she was pleased to finally try it out, it being its recently evolved form. She even fiddled with the wamr gem that never left her side; not that she would actually use Moltres in a petty battle such as this, but it was always a comforting feeling.
"Excellent, I'm happy to battle you. Please, let us go into the next room." She gestured towards the room, all too excited to finally test her discipline in a controlled battling environment. I just hope I can hold back.
"Today I'm feeling very good, let us use three pokemon. Switchouts on rare occasions and for the three on three I do decree, let us announce them here and now. Since it is my belief the challenger needs to adapt to the challenge, I will release my two first."
All too zealous to show off her twin team at once, she eagerly threw out Mr. Doom.
"I'm sure you remember my troublesome puppy from our first encounter at the Eirlys festival." She ruffled Doom's head-fur.
"Next, please meet Aziza, my lovely Flareon."
Upon it's released, Aziza's fur glinted and shimmered even in the low lighting of Akane's arena. The arena itself was simple, yet elegant. It was illuminated by irridescent mosaic glasses in the ceiling of the temple. It also had a few side gardens with both plants, and even zen rocks on both sides-a very Ecruteak-influenced building. Akane even made the remark about how the original leader himself was from Ecruteak.
She waited patiently for Nicole to announce her three as well and then Akane would happily begin by choosing her first one. Come now, I've been waiting my whole life for a friendly battle. Let's go.
Nicole followed Akane into the next room and watched as she released her Houndoom and her Flareon. It seemed she was in for an interesting battle. Looking at the strap of her backpack, a smaller and newer one than her normal one since she had been certain she wasn’t going to need the one she used for her exploring, she mused about which ones of her Pokemon she should send out.
“Interesting choices… That leaves me with a tough decision to make.” She said casually as she reached one hand up to grab the one Netball that was on the strap, as well as one of the normal Pokeballs. “But I think I have my Pokemon picked out. Kit, Loki, come out and introduce yourselves.” She said throwing the Pokeballs out. Instantly the form of a net came from the Netball while the normal red light came from the normal Pokeball as the two Pokemon she had called out were released.
Putting the two balls back on her backpack strap, Nicole watched as Kit and Loki shook themselves out and looked towards the other Pokemon in front of them. After a moment of this, Kit looked back at his trainer and gave her a slightly glaring look with a small huff and a monotone “Vapor” before sticking his nose up into the air and flopping down on the ground like a cat about to go to sleep. Nicole gave a sigh at this and face-palmed sure that this was going to either make the other woman think she couldn’t control her own Pokemon, or amuse her greatly.
Loki, on the other hand, moved to stand at her side, almost as though he was trying to hide behind her leg slightly as he watched the other Pokemon cautiously. Nicole merely had to move the hand that was in front of her face and look down at him once, to know that he was already putting on a hoax so that he could observe the other Pokemon better. Out of all her Pokemon he was the only one who seemed to be level-headed, despite some of his antics.

After releasing her pokemon, Nicole seemed slightly annoyed with the vaporeon’s actions, but it mattered not, the red lady was too eager for battle to care. She bowed and turned to leave, but not before noticing Mr. Doom had taken a liking to the duchess’ furfrou. Doom stretched into a playful stance, and to this Aziza only hissed and followed after Akane. Doom, surprised by Aziza’s sound, snapped back into reality and trotted behind his trainer, his tongue lolling about.
Taking her position on the opposite side of the gym, Akane ordered Mr. Doom to go first. Doom responded by walking ahead of her and striking a prideful pose, waiting for Akane’s next order, or the sweet release of all his potential power in his mega-evolution.
”Ready when you are, Duchess Everfield.” a simple taunt, but none unfriendly or otherwise. Doom responded with a roar that shook the walls. I hope she throws out that furfrou. I need to teach Doom some discipline. Again…
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Nicole once more followed the woman’s example and moved to stand in the area designated for the challenger of the gym. Briefly, Nicole saw Akane’s eyes go to Loki and she instantly figured out what the other woman was hoping for. But was she ready to throw the other into battle? She looked over at Kai, who had moved to stand next to her when she had moved, then over at Loki whose eyes were trained ahead on the other Pokemon. Deciding to allow her Pokemon a chance to choose their match, she closed her eyes and held one hand out to the arena. “Who wants to go first?” She asked
There was a moment of pause before the sound of a scoff could be heard from the side Kai was on and the sound of his tail hitting the ground could be heard before it was accompanied by the sound of it slithering across the floor as he moved to take a battle position. Opening her eyes, Nicole gave Kai a surprised look before shrugging and turning her attention to Akane.
“Ready whenever you are, Queen Akane.”
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
It was a custom of the gym’s previous owner to bow before he battled. Respecting that custom, Akane bowed to her opponent, the Duchess of the wastes. If she proved herself by wearing the queen’s shiny new badge, perhaps she could graduate from just a child, to a real asset. It seemed the furfrou accepted Doom’s challenge which truly delighted Akane. Once Nicole had confirmed her readiness, Akane continued.
The red lady wanted to carry on the strong traditions of the gym, another being the challenger must conform to the stage the gym’s leader sets. Then, based on how well the challenger can adapt and learn, they can earn the badge; even if it’s a few tries to years later.
”So it begins…” She whispered. ”Doom, use dark pulse! Trash furfrou’s vision! Then use sludge bomb! Muck up the stage!”
Even though, Doom would be following his nose to fire the sludge bomb at furfrou in the dark, the main purpose of his attack was to muck up furfrou’s nose so it couldn’t find Doom in the dark. Not that the dark pulse would last but a few seconds, but it could give Doom enough of an edge. If not, Akane planned to leave the sludge over the stage for use later or if furfrou grew careless, poisoning it for a mistaken step in the dark.
”I know how much of a tank a furfrou is with that coat, especially since you’ve left it to grow wildly thick. I will need to proceed with caution if I am to beat you, Duchess.” Her sly smile welcomed Nicole’s next move.
Nicole gave a small laugh at that. "Loki won't let me touch his fur. It's his choice to have it messy." She said before she watched Loki dance in place with a small canine grin on his face. "Loki, Do you mind...? There is all that nasty sludge on the ground and I don't want it in your fur." She said simply. Loki's face lit up at the comment as water began to flow out from below his paws for a Surf. The water then began to grow in size until it was a gigantic tilde wave and it surged forward crashing into the ground with a large amount of force. Since the Dark Pulse was in play, he couldn't see very well, but he could sure make a ruckus with his attack. Nicole then gave a small smile and called out. "Oh Loki, maybe you should disappear as well." Loki's feet then immediately went to work as a hole formed underneath him and he disappeared into the earth with Dig.
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
A high-pitched rumble from Doom could be heard as he shot back towards Akane to avoid the water.
”Doom! Doom. No. you’re in the middle of a battle. No I will not withdraw you get back in there and battle with some sort of dignity. Don’t give me those puppyeyes. Put those back.”
After battling with Doom before making him go back out, the queen ordered him to chase the furfrou with sludge bomb, mainly because he could do it at a distance. As if he was cannon, Doom began firing sludge bombs at the furfrou left and right.
”Sorry Duchess, I need to have something to chip away at that health. Not to worry, as Duchess, you have full access to the facilities such as a groomer.”
After furfrou dug underground, Akane order Doom to begin firing sludgebombs in the hole. But Doom yelped, which forced Akane to order his sludgebombs to go at his feet.
”Just like you did with combusken. Heavily coat the ground beneath you, so if he dares attack you he will be poisoned.” Her intense glare went right into Nicole as if asking, what are you going to do now?
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Nicole merely smirked at the other woman and whistled loudly. As called by the whistle, Loki dug out of the ground right next to her, tail wagging. “I guess you weren’t paying attention to the dig pattern. Loki, Surf your tunnels.” She said, first addressing the queen in front of her, and then addressing Loki. Loki gave a small howl as water once more formed underneath him and began flowing into the hole created by the Dig he had just used.
From underneath the battle field a loud rumbling could be heard until little geyser like effects started happening all over the field where little holes seemed to have been dug strategically around. This allowed the water more access to Akane’s side of the field. The only holes close to where the Houndoom was standing were mere inches from where the Sludge was.
The fact that Loki was acting fine now, was the only thing hinting towards him not being poisoned, but Nicole knew he was a good liar, and so she knew she would have to keep an eye on him this next round to truly figure out or not.

”Doom! Use your fire spin on yourself! As hot as you can make it!” \
In response, Doom bent his head low at the rumbling of the water sloshing through the tunnels, arched his back and released an almost purely white and blue firestorm around himself. The firespin was distorted and awkward as it fought back half the water, the other half sizzling, but dousing Doom’s heat.
When the surf cleared, Doom obviously lost half of his health after the exertion. Akane was silent for the moment when both trainers assessed their pokemon. The houndoom was left standing in a muddied puddle of water and poisonous liquid.
”Doom, I know you’re tired. They don’t have to be too hot, just hot enough to burn through that fur. Use fire spin at the furfrou to catapult the slow-moving flames at him.” Doom raised a temple of flames close by the white dog. ”Good. Now break it into will-o-wisps and burn him!” The wisps used the momentum of the spin to shoot towards Loki.
That surf will be poor Doom’s downfall.

Nicole’s worst fear was confirmed when Loki gave a small flinch even before the yelp of pain caused by the fire sent his way by the Houndoom hit him. This was not a good sign at all. Trying to think quickly, Nicole called out the first move that came to mind that had a chance of helping her poor Pokemon. Plus, since he was already poisoned, from the looks of it, the sludge would no longer do the poison damage, and only the slight physical.
“Hang in there Loki! Get away from the flames using Dig!” She shouted out, putting faith in her Pokemon that would be able to work, for just a while longer, with his new impairment. Taking Nicole’s command, Loki quickly dug down into the earth, but not before Nicole noticed he didn’t look so good after that last attack.
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
The red woman already was beyond irritated at the continuous use of dig as a scapegoat from Doom’s raw power. Immediately she ordered Doom to create as many wisps as possible and flood the new and remaining tunnels with the wisps, and to feel out where any non-flooded tunnels might be hiding. The room was almost serene for a moment, like thousands of stars or lanterns illuminating the shaded interior of the golden building. Doom continuously fired off wisps, but Akane could tell, he was growing tired; this match was going to be short, but so much power from the two pokemon over-whelmed her.
”That’s a strong pokemon you’ve got. That fur coat is tough. I hope you don’t mind if Doom trims it up for you, Duchess of the jagged ridge.” Though said in a taunting manner, Akane meant no real damage by it, and even expected a better comeback from her under aged equal.
Finally, Doom could sense one of his wisps might have caught the furfrou and immediately he began barking and growling cutting Akane’s taunting short. ”You may have found him? Good! Use a fire spin like a whip and flush him out!” Doom’s mouth reached upwards to breathe out more fire before he slung his muzzle downwards and the flames crashed into the hole. I hope it’s actually the dog and not something ridiculous like a decoy or a passing by rattata.
