This was it. His first official Gym Leader battle…. His. First. Official. Gym. Leader. Battle. The very thought was still nerve wracking and amazing at the same time. That was most likely the reason he was standing so nervous/impatiently near the front of the tent that was his gym. He was waiting for Akane to show up, since she was the one who had sent him the letter of challenge. He hadn’t expected to get one so quickly after he had opened his gym to public challenges. He honestly thought it would take longer for people to hear that it had opened and that it actually existed. Behind him, his Pokemon were all anxious as well, each one of them trying their best to hide it in their own ways, and failing as their nervous ticks started to show through. Especially Deamon, the Tropius who had ended up with him after his last visit to his village before he had convinced the elders and opened his gym.
Today the red lady was venturing to a place she had only visited briefly, and not for any casual reasons such as a gym challenge. She decided to wear a more elegant and more modest choice of clothing for her grand entrance. She had to stop and ask for directions a few times, and she surely stuck out. Many of the humble people she passed gawked at her glittering attire and swarm of guards. Not to mention her side-saddle ride on a magnificent rapidash.
When she finally arrived, she noticed Maleko looking rather anxious outside his tent. Dismounting and striding proudly to the young man, she initiated her challenge. ”Maleko, of the Southern Plains, I hereby challenge your gym! Now, eh, take me there.” She didn’t mean to sound rude when she tapered off, but she had a hard time imagining the flimsily built thing he stood in front of was the gym. ”This is, after all, your house right? Oh is that your gym over yonder?” She asked pointing to a far off ruin of an old temple or shrine. ”Looks interesting! Come, let us go forth to battle!” In an excited response, Pyrois the rapidash whinnied, kicked out, and flared out his mane, nearly catching one of the guards on fire and kicking another in the face.
Ummm… well this was going to be awkward to explain. Looking into the tent that he was standing in the doorway of, he tried to figure out how he was going to get the queen’s attention. Best option is to yell? Best option is to yell. “W-Wait! This t-tent is my Gym! And t-this is the Eastern Plains!” The yell was loud enough to echo off the closest houses to the tent. Hopefully he wouldn’t get into trouble for yelling at the queen of Celosia, but what else could he do? She was about to completely bypass the actual gym to go to some… ruins? Those were just rocks anyways! Just because his gym wasn’t fancy didn’t mean that it was worth being overlooked. Especially since he had to fight tooth and nail to get the elders to make the settlement permanent and allow him to make material for his gym, (that he had to put up himself) thank you!
From inside the gym, all of his Pokemon had frozen in whatever they had been doing to pay attention to what their trainer was doing. It was odd for them (minus Shard of course) to hear the boy raise his voice. Shard seemed to shrug off the shouting and tried to regather the attention of the other Pokemon once more so that they could remain calm before their battle to come. Both he and Shiver knew that the red woman was a fire-type user and that meant they would have to work doubly as hard to win, if they could.
Pyrois’s mane almost went out with a gust of wind, Akane was stunned silent. It had been so long since the woman had been exposed to such a simple environment with her status being so high. She wasn’t upset or against it, though her face wrinkled in disgust at her recently cultivated arrogance about such matters. Though the Western plains comment was yet but a simple slip of the tongue. She hadn’t noticed Maleko raise his voice, but she could sense his comfortableness. After a brief silence, she finally spoke.
”Ah I see. I assume I may have offended you. I mean nothing by it. It’s just been so long since I’ve… visited such humble conditions.”
It had been a strange year, fighting Lugia, meeting new royalty and rising civilizations and meeting new and interesting people, it was nice to be taken back to the calmer life of others. Although upon entering the gym, she hoped the badge was well-worth it. She looked around at all the grass types inhabiting the gym, inwardly she prayed they were strong enough to withstand the thrashing from her army of fire-types.

Well… he hadn’t been expecting the apology, but he wasn’t going to complain. In fact he was happy that he hadn’t gotten in trouble for his yelling. Walking over to his team, Maleko gathered them around and gave them all pats on the head. From his place now off to the side Gale gave a small cheer for his friends and for his trainer hoping that it would at least give them a little bit more confidence in themselves. Looking back at the queen, Maleko took a deep breath and began his practiced speech for the rules.
“T-This gym is a single b-battle gym. T-There will be two b-battles so please choose t-two Pokemon use in t-the battles. T-There are no switch o-outs. N-No items may be u-used. Are these r-rules clear?” He asked hoping that he was clear enough, and that his stutter was not getting in the way of the explanation.
”Transparently, and Maleko, there’s no reason to be nervous around me. Unless it is diagnosed, please do not stutter. Besides, stating what you mean with confidence commands respect.” the last two words, being spoken in her voice she used for reaching her voice out over vast distances and floors of her castle. Of course, she never had really known the fear of other people, so what seemed so simple to her, never crossed her mind it could be traumatic for others.
”Now let us begin yes? I’m eager to win me a badge today after traveling all this way.” She smiled and laughed heartily, as if she was ten years younger. ”Pyrois, are you tired from your journey?” The rapidash quickly answered with a snort and small kick, before proudly trotting up to Akane’s side. Pyrois was a proud pokemon, and his snooty stance only showcased it, as the rapidash awaited the pokemon he would face.My internet keeps going out. Otherwise I would have posted this last night; sorry about that.

A small smile seemed to be the only way he could think to do in response to what the other had said. She didn't know that his stutter was not something he could control. Seeing as the queen had already made her choice for her first Pokemon, Maleko decided to reciprocate. "Shard, l-lets do this!" Shard gave a nod and a call as he ran over to the area next to Maleko from his place with the other Pokemon. The rest of his Pokemon either laid down, in the case of his four-legged companions, or took a seat on the ground or the head of the closest Pokemon.
"I h-hope I can at l-least make the battle f-fun. Y-You seem t-to have the advantage h-here." Was all that was said to the comment about wanting to win the badge he was giving out after traveling for so long. He didn't know how well he would do against Fire Pokemon with his team, but he was hoping to at least put up a challenge before conceding any sort of final result to his first Gym challenger.
As a gym leader, Akane knew he wasn’t stupid. The Queen’s pokemon were way older, stronger, and more experienced and unless they all fell over and died she was walking out with that gym badge and she damn well knew it. Pyrois approached the deer pokemon and had he done a cheap flamethrower he probably would have melted the deerling right there, but he was royal and had a title to hold up, especially as this was his first important battle. The rapidash courteously bowed to his opponent before galloping to his respective side of the flimsily marked edge of the arena and waited for his opponent to do the same.
”Maleko, please give me your respect for I will be doing so in return. As a fellow gym leader, my experience will not hold me back. Pyrois, wild charge.”
Pyrois hadn’t even started moving before lightening began forming around him, as if he was soaking in every bit of electricity bussing off around him. The stallion opened his eyes and in a blink of the human eye he already loomed over to the deerling, his horn almost magically shooting out sparks and lightning bolts as the rest of his body was engulfed with pure static energy. Horn first, he didn’t even hesitate in the slightest, he was going to either pierce or throw the smaller pokemon up for the kill shot depending on how fast the pokemon could move.

pokemon.pikasaur.com/compare/54-495/Rapidash-vs-Snivy This was it. The first battle had started… and he already felt over his head, but then… maybe… That was a good thing. It was not like he couldn’t use this as a learning experience as well as a battle. And he trusted his partner with everything he had. Shard had been with him for so long the two were two sides of the same coin. All he had to do was trust in him and he would be fine.
“Shard, plant the g-garden!” He called watching as the Snivy did just that and shot round after round of Leech Seed into the air and onto the ground, beginning to run while doing so in hopes of dodging the Wild Charge.
