Chazz continued to sit, watching the contestants. Truly it was christmas....lady christmas, at least for Chazz. Watching women in beautiful dresses frolic around. He would pin a metal on all of them if he could, well do more than that. Chazz could relax no military obligations, he could just chill. He looked at Akane, she would get the biggest metal. He giggled a little.
The Queen of Ice put on a great show, she also looked great in that green dress. Chazz was a kid in a candy store with all these pretty ladies around.
The red queen wasn’t sure if Eira meant business today, but this was soon remedied by her astonishing finish. Akane stood once more to speak to Eira eye-to-eye.
“Well, well, well, it seems my fellow Queen was ready to earn her points today. I am pleased to see your new pokemon can pull off such a performance. I’m quite surprised your ditto could control such tough moves so quickly.” She shifted her weight to build suspense, but not much could be built because everyone knew she was skilled.
“Congratulations Eira on your impressive twenty-three. Who is surprised? I’m not.” She laughed heartily and the audience clapped very loudly for their most recent ally.
“Now I am please to welcome back Zandrophin for another performance. I don’t even need to give this man good luck as he has already snapped up Laparas Lounge’s badge before coming here today!”
The crowd roared again for another favorite while Akane returned again to her chair.

Zandrophin straightened Dolos' tie and walked out onto the stage. Some of the people in the stands were present for his last performance. They cheered as he walked out.
They remember us....that may help things, Sir.
Not necessarily...Akane is still our executioner. Stay sharp.
Zandrophin walked into the center of the stage and flourished a bow to Akane and his audience. He lowered his head for a moment, and when he brought it back up, he was in full entertainer mode.
"Good evening, citizens of Celosia! I'm so glad you could all come out here tonight. My name is Zandrophin, and I hail from Saffron City in Kanto. You all came to see a show...and I don't plan on disappointing!"
The crowd roared. Zandrophin smiled,
"I see that most of you know I'm not kidding. That's great...you just made my job much harder."
There was laughter from the audience. So far, so good.
"Now...those of you who've seen me before should all remember Mentus?"
The Abra began hovering at the mention of his name, and began to teleport around the room amidst the cheers of the audience. He got in amongst them, messed with hair, sat on heads, and even borrowed some old man's popcorn. Zandrophin snapped his fingers and Mentus came right back, hovering on Zandrophin's left.
"He will not be alone tonight, however. Please welcome one of the newest editions to my team, Dolos!"
Spinning a full 360 degrees on the balls of his feet, Zandrophin threw the Dusk ball out onto the stage. Three shadowy orbs came out of the ball, shot into the air, looped around, and came together back on the stage. Dolos appeared with a small flash of light. The crowd cheered again. Dolos took his place at Zandrophin's right. Zandrophin outstretched both of his arms. Dolos and Mentus took their places at the opposite side of the arena and turned to face Zandrophin. Mentus hovered a few meters off the ground, Dolos directly beneath him. Zandrophin took a deep breath before speaking,
"Your eyes are a great tool. They allow you to see beautiful and terrible things. They give you perspective, and are the windows to the soul. However, what happens when those are taken away? What happens when what was once light grows dark?"
As Zandrophin was speaking, Mentus began to manifest the shape of the Psychic eye symbol. The giant purple eye floated just above him, at eye level with the people in the middle rows. Zandrophin continued,
"What happens...when the eyes are blinded?"
As soon as he said this, Mentus sent out a psychic message to all in the audience,
Shield your eyes.
A split second afterwards, The eye closed and a bright flash enveloped the arena. Zandrophin could only hope that most of the audience had followed his instructions. The audience looked down and saw that Dolos was now effectively blind. Many were confused by this, but had little time to process it, as Zandrophin spoke again,
"Yes, ladies and gentlemen...Dolos is now temporarily blinded. The eyes may be helpful, but this performance will show what the other senses can do. Dolos' job is to get across the field and reach me...while Mentus attempts to prevent him through the use of the dummies Lady Akane has provided and through a few tricks of our own."
He paused to let the audience settle before continuing,
"As with my previous performance, there will be few vocal cues. Now, without further ado," he said, all three bowing elegantly, "let us begin. Dolos...return."
Dolos didn't make a dash for Zandrophin at first. Instead, he started at a slower trot. This had been part of their training during their off-time...to sharpen their senses in case they were ever injured. As he got closer, Mentus began his work. He began by using Psychic to shift the ground beneath Dolos' feet, trying to trip him up. When this didn't work, he simply pulled him back or turned him around. Still to no avail. Then he moved on to the dummies. He picked them up a few at a time and teleported them out in front of Dolos.
Dolos heard the wood dummies hit the stage, and used Double Team. Four phantom images appeared around him. He used Quick Attack immediately afterwards, and all five Absols disappeared. They reappeared on the other side of the dummies, which were cut in precise places and fell down. The afterimages disappeared and Dolos kept going, beginning to increase in speed.
The next trick Mentus tried involved those two boxes of red orbs, which Zandrophin had given him at the beginning of the match. He took control of a few of these, and lobbed them around Dolos. The orbs hit the ground and popped loudly. These were an attempt to disorient Dolos. They worked momentarilly, since Dolos had to dodge them using Quick Attack. However, the Absol was soon back on the right track. Mentus tried a different tactic. He returned to the dummies and placed 30 of them down in 6 rows, 5 deep. Dolos ran at these, full-speed, and the sythe on his head began to glow. He swung out, and Night Slash obliterated the dummies.
With Dolos still going, Mentus attempted something else. He used Calm Mind on Dolos, who stopped. He made it so all could hear what both Pokemon were saying.
You've made it. Congratulations.
The human has not said to stop. Not there yet.
No...your act is over now...it's finished.
As Mentus was saying this, he'd created a ring of dummies which were slowly closing in on Dolos. He began to slowly spin them. This was the tip Dolos needed. He heard the dummies wooshing through the air, and decided to create a wind of his own. He crouched down like a cat and began to generate a Razor Wind. There was no sound in the wind, but people could feel it. Just as the dummies closed in, Dolos Attacked. White lines appeared, striking the dummies repeatedly. All fell to the ground in pieces.
Mentus had had enough. He began to rapidly teleport Dolos all over the arena. Finally setting him down. He used Calm Mind again and spoke,
Where are you now? Where is your Master?
.....Right beside. I am home.
The crowd began to applaud. All three bowed again, and Zandrophin stepped forward.
"I know what many of you are thinking. They were supposed to create an interesting spectacle by working together...not by competing? However, ladies and gentlemen, isn't competition what pushes us all to try our best..so that when we have to work together, we are already at our peak of performance? Competition strengthens teamwork; this performance proves that. We thank you for your attention."
The trio bowed again and awaited their judgement.
Do not fight for a cause or for what you believe in: Fight for yourself, because who you are rarely changes. Zandrophin
Nicole applauded along with the rest of the audience. The two performances after hers were definitely better than hers. They were professionals, she was an amateur. Still this was her first time in a contest. For her to score as high as she did was a marvel to her.
Beside her, Phaedra had perched herself on Nero's back and was messing with his ears making him turn and glare at her every once in a while. This made her give a chiding look at them making them stop. "Pay attention. We can learn from them. Plus what you are doing is rude." She stage whispered to them causing both of them to look abashed and turn their attention to the stage.
That taken care of, Nicole turned her attention back to the stage to wait for the last participant to go through the preliminaries.
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
Once again, Zandrophin had impressed Akane with his interesting twist on things. Though it wasn’t brilliant move combinations, it was brilliant in showcasing the true strength of both the pokemon. It was just what Akane expected from him. And she was pleased to know the absol had only grown in strength in Zandrophin’s care.
”Zandrophin, you never fail to disappoint me. I especially loved the usage of props,” she chuckled as she leveled herself eye-to-eye.
”Zandrophin, after this performance, I expect you to do exceptionally well in the next round. However, for this preliminary round I proudly award you a marvelous score of twenty. An excellent springboard for the next round.” She felt bad she couldn’t award more points, but it mattered not. He would destroy in the next round anyway.
”I know that feels like a tough act to follow, but give it up for your last competitor of the day Maleko!” Once again she applauded with the audience as she returned to her seat.
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Guess it was his turn. Making his way out of the back, Shard riding on Mistletoe's back, he prepared himself to the best of his abilities. It was now or never... it was show time. As they entered onto the stage, he waved his Pokemon ahead, hoping that they were good at improvising. Since his discussion with the judge, he had not really had time to plan anything out.
Lucky for him, Shard and Mistletoe seemed to have an idea of what to do.
Right as they reached the center of the stage, Shard threw out a Vine Whip, pushing himself off of Mistletoe's back while the Deerling began a double kick to send him further into the air. From his airborne position, Shard began to release a Leech Seed like rain to the ground, while Mistletoe began throwing the same attack except upwards giving the effect that they were juggling to life-sucking seeds, yet not actually letting them touch each other. That part of the act seemed to end as gravity took a hold of Shard,
But that didn't seem to put a stop to all they had planned. As he descended, Shard threw out another Vine Whip, this time wrapping it around Mistletoe's torse and used it as a way to guide him safely to her back where he released a toxic around the area in the form of rain. As the attack began to fall, Mistletoe quickly gathered together and energy ball and sent it through, evaporating the liquid and leaving a shine to the area while it lasted.
Maleko could not believe how well his Pokemon seemed to work together, and was even more shocked when Shard jumped from Mistletoe's back as they began to give a bow. Noticing his Pokemon were giving him a cue, he bowed as well, a smile on his face. No one would need to know all of that was last minuted improv.
Akane was intrigued, she never much cared for the grass types, but she didn’t dislike them either. This new trainer showed promise, but was clearly a beginner. Akane noticed him motioning with his pokemon, but the movements were off. The pokemon were either extremely well trained, or bred for contests to work together so well.
”I must say, I do love it when I get and unorthodox trainer. Your performance may have only granted you a seventeen, but an impressive and solid seventeen it is. You should be proud to carry it into the next round.” She had hoped he didn’t get his spirits down. In the next round that vine whip would prove useful.
The red lady turned to her contestants whom had been summoned yet again.
”Excellent job from all of you. You all have worked very hard to earn those impressive scores. Now your final task in this two round contest begins; this is another double battle-style contest, but instead, you the trainer are preforming alongside your pokemon. By this I mean you are heavily incorporated into the routine. Either helping your pokemon jump higher, or even by dancing with them-it does not matter as long as you show me true teamwork and a true testament to your friendship and trust you’ve built with your pokemon. Also if you have more than two pokemon I am allowing you to use different pokemon for this round.” What a long winded speech. Shows you how long it’s been since I had to give a speech. "Nicole, if you wouldn't mind going first again, please."
"Sanity is only an idea made real, to make those who are boring feel better." -Akane
Nicole gave a nod and looked down at her Pokemon. Nero looked like he wanted to sit this one out, while Phaedra had sparkles in her eyes. Giving it no thought at the reactions of the Pokemon, she patted Nero on the head. "Nero, why don't you go and help the guard watching Rhea? Take a break, you've earned it." She told him watching as his eyes widened. Without missing a beat he licked her cheek and ran off to where her preparation room was. Laughing at this, Nicole looked over at Phaedra. "Ready to give another performance?" She asked getting an eager nod from the Braixen who almost seemed to be jumping in place. Giving a nod of acknowledgement Nicole, with Phaedra following, headed to the stage.
As they appeared on the edge of the stage Nicole looked down at Phaedra who nodded back and jumped up at an angle towards the hands Nicole now had held out for a spring board. Landing her feet where they were needed, Nicole lifted them in a forward motion sending the Braixen forward into a flip.
What would not be noticeable, unless you paid close attention, was that she had grabbed her stick and was not charging it with a Fire Blast. While this was going on, Nicole, still agile and somehow graceful, moved forward to the place Phaedra was falling towards and caught her. It was only when she felt hands on her waist and she was sure she was upright, that she lifted the stick into the air, and released the Fire Blast into the air.
This in turn, had Nicole once again throwing Phaedra upwards. This time her stick was charged with a Psychic which Phaedra used to catch the remains of the Fire Blast she had thrown in the air and separate it into little contained flames that fell to the stage like a bright... fire snow. Again, Nicole caught her as she fell, immediately setting her down on the ground with one of her paws still in her hand as she spun her in a slow motion twirl. Nicole too was moving in a waltzing motion, though it was more for gracefully dodging of the falling contained fires, all-the-while still keeping the slow twirl going until the fire snow had completely disappeared.
Once they were gone Nicole gave Phaedra one last twirl to which the Pokemon added a well-timed Tail Whip, making the dress she was wearing flare out slightly before settling down. Once again this was the end of the performance. Short, yes, but again nerves didn't allow for more on Nicole's side.
Together both Nicole and Phaedra gave a curtsy to the crowd and began to head to the back once more. They had done their best, and even if they didn't win this time, there was always next time. This would just be considered good practice. Heck... The whole performance they had just given had been improvised at best.
"I guess normal was never supposed to be a word for me." - Nicole
Okay... this is not something he was sure he could do. While watching Nicole's performance he was feeling like his stomach was going to tie itself in a knot. He had never had to do anything like this... not once. Could he actually pull off something amazing in this round to make up for the seventeen points he had gotten before? His hand slipped into the other pocket of the borrowed suit that didn't hold his Pokeballs, and grasp his flute lightly for comfort. He really should just worry about that when the time came. After Nicole and her Pokemon gave their bows, he clapped along with the audience. It had been short, but the two seemed more comfortable with it being that way.
Looking over at Eira, the next one who was going to perform, he couldn't help but wonder what she was going to do.
Akane decided she would hold off the score for this round until the end when she declared the winner. Wondering if she was being too generous at Nicole’s heft of points she had just racked up, the red haired woman could do nothing but smile. She walked to meet her face to face again.
”I like to see you took my advice. That little Phaedra of yours is a true contest competitor. And your team work this round was impeccable. Keep up the exceptional work, and know you have earned yourself a comfortable score.”
The red lady initiated the spectator’s clapping, and after a few moments when they expressed their appreciation for their most recent performance, Akane cleared her throat to continue.
”What a tough act to follow, how will lady Eira personally preform in the spotlight?” her foreboding words were said in a playful tone. She expected great things from Eira.

Chazz sat in his chair watching Akane soak up each contestants performance. She was passionate about pokemon, and Chazz admired her for that. Chazz however was grateful he was not a judge. He was too busy being enamored by all the foxy ladies about. Hopefully there would be an after party, with just him and all these lovely ladies. Chazz leaned close to Akane before the next performance began and said, "Thank you for my birthday gift." It wasn't Chazz's birthday, but Akane would get the joke. Seeing all these women in dresses beat having to do performance reviews with the council.
Eira sighed to relax her nerves, deciding on who she would use as her partner for this round. If it was based of her bond with her Pokemon, then there's no doubt who she should use since only one of her Pokemon had an almost human level of bond with her and that was Grace. Making her decision, Eira walked out onto the stage with Grace's Love Ball in hand.
"Alright, Grace, start things off with a Heal Bell!" Eira called, throwing the ball high into the air. Grace was released from her ball near the roof of the stage with a small giggle before she seemed to summon a large golden bell that emit a low pitched ring, soothing the audience with its tone. With each chime, the bell seemed to give off a wave of golden light that flooded the audience with warmth and comfort. Grace began to drop after a few rings, her bell disappearing as she giggled in her descent towards the ground. Eira hurried forward and caught her baby securely in her arms, inwardly sighing that she had managed to catch the little one before she could have gotten hurt. Eira steeled herself for her next move, knowing that it would take a lot of skill on her part to come up with a good performance along with it. "Metronome!"
Grace giggled more as she began waving her tiny little arms back and forth before she began to glow a bright orange and rose from Eira's arms. Eira had to stare for a moment as Grace began to fly around before she recognized the attack as Brave Bird. "Towards me Grace!"
Grace flew towards her mama cheerfully, not registering that the attack could seriously damage Eira if it made full impact. Eira frowned when she realized this herself, deciding quickly she needed to cut off the attack early. "Protect!"
Grace frowned as the energy dissipated around her and was replaced by a bright blue orb, slowing her down as she reached Eira so the young woman could just reach out and grab the orb. "And now Return on the ground."
Grace giggled as Eira knelt so Grace could reach the ground from her arms. Grace's hand began to glow a bright white before she punched the ground with her little fist, sending herself and Eira high into the air. Eira had to hold back a scream at their sudden height as Grace continued to giggle away that they were in the air once more. Eira somersaulted in the air before the two started to fall towards the ground again, Eira hoping that their landing would be alright without the use of Protect to cushion it. Eira landed hard on her feet, sending her to her knees, but she managed to keep a smile on her face since Grace was still laughing from their flight. Eira shakily stood on her legs, knowing well that she was probably going to have to see a doctor after this, but believing her performance had gone well.
Akane shot up immediately after her fellow queen’s performance ended.
”Guards! Escort and find a doctor immediately!” Akane new her fellow queen had broken something or at least severely ruptured or tore ligaments.
”But first, I’m disappointed after you blew us all away with your first performance. I saw very warm love from you, but your trust in that pokemon was transparently clear; the pokemon is too young to understand and realize when you are in danger, especially from itself. In a sticky situation I don’t imagine you’d use that pokemon to help you out, and I wouldn’t blame you. She is still undertrained and young.
Now on your performance, simply catching her over and over is not entertaining and fully incorporating your own physical strengths. But all in all in the end you certainly redeemed yourself in your quick thinking and willingness to injure yourself in order to protect your pokemon. Now please, relax as my guards see you to the doctor. If need be there are stretchers for your comfort. Please hurry and heal quickly.”
She sighed as Eira could not object to the forceful nature of the Celosian guards. I’ll be damned if we become enemies after she injured herself in my kingdom.
”Moving right along, another veteran coordinator, Zandrophin has decided, I’m sure, to grace us with yet another unique performance. Please welcome him.”

Zandrophin came back into the arena, and decided to showboat his entrance. Leaving Mentus on the sideline to watch, he opened up his shirt and reached the center of the stage, not by walking, but by performing a series of reverse handsprings. When he reached the stage, he revolved a full 360 degrees on the balls of his feet, and threw his Field ball. The whirlwind of leaves reached up towards the ceiling, came back down, and revealed Rose. When she appeared, she twirled, causing the lotus skirt to flare a bit.
"Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it for Rose!"
The crowd cheered and Rose bowed. Zandrophin took off his overshirt and tossed it to Mentus, who caught it and held it above the ground. Against his black undershirt, Zandrophin's necklace was clearly visable, as well as a multitude of scars on his arms. The pair bowed to Lady Akane and to the rest of the audience. Zandrophin grinned confidently as he spoke,
"Ladies and gentlemen, you are all in for a treat tonight. Rose and I would like to perform a routine for your enjoyment. I will warn you now, this routine is very dangerous, and may be upsetting to those of you with weak constitutions. If any of you have second thoughts about this, please take this time to leave the arena."
A few of the people left, but it was probably for the better. Zandrophin didn't want to scar anyone. He continued,
"Right, then. This routine, put simply, is a dance; a dance to showcase the link of trust between trainer and Pokemon. Rose and I have worked on this routine for quite some time, and I will tell you now that you will not be disappointed. Now, without any more introduction, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Rose, whenever you're ready."
After waiting a few moments, Rose began to play a melody using GrassWhistle. It was almost like a waltz, with a long, flowing sound with a pronounced downbeat. Both she and Zandrophin began to sway side to side in rythm. Keeping with the three-step rythm, Zandrophin began to circle around Rose, maybe six feet away, spinning and moving like he had a partner with him. As he did this, Rose used Magical leaf and Sweet Scent to coat the leaves, giving them a shimmery texture, and causing the room to smell of lilac and honey. These leaves orbited halfway between Rose and Zandrophin for a few moments. As the waltz ended, the act began.
The music picked up tempo, almost like a flamenco. The air acquired the strong scent of pine and ash. Zandrophin abandoned his "partner", and continued his orbits by himself, only much faster this time. With a nod from Zandrophin, Rose sent the leaves high into the air, and back towards Zandrophin. The man moved with impressive speed, dodging in between all the leaves, while still keeping tempo. Back in Saffron, he'd been known for his featherstep style of movement; if anyone wanted to hit him, they really had to try.
More leaves, from all directions, continued to appear. Zandrophin dodged them all by jumping, spinning, cartwheeling, and many other acrobatic maneuvers. All the while, he would be moving closer to Rose, forcing her to either dodge out of the way or redirect the leaves. Though they were under her control, they were still dangerous, and she knew this. As the dance progressed, the leaves increased in number and in speed, to the point where it was almost impossible to track them. Zandrophin was moving so fast, that many of the audience might've claimed he had an afterimage. Everything was going fabulously.
...Then Rose got hit.
She'd become to overzealous during the routine; this happened when she was having too much fun with something. The leaves came even faster, and Zandrophin barely had time to dodge...and he was right in front of Rose. The wave of leaves struck her and, because of their speed, it was extremely painful. The music stopped, as did Zandrophin.
"ROSE!!" he shouted as he ran over to check on her. She wasn't hurt terribly, but she wasn't just scratched up, either. Her petals were torn and her body had many cuts on it.
Rose managed to get to her feet and tried to shake it off. She didn't convince Zandrophin. He stood in front of her, flourished his knife with blinding speed, and cut his upper right arm. He stood, arms outstretched, and said,
"Rose, I'm sorry. Take whatever you need to heal yourself. Giga Drain."
Rose did as she was told, though reluctantly. The roses on the end of her arms glowed and green orbs of energy seeped out of Zandrophin. He grunted slightly in pain, but stood firm. When Rose had taken what she needed, Zandrophin sank to one knee before standing again. He stretched out his left arm, and his overshirt flew back on, directed by Mentus. His right arm remained exposed at his side. He nodded his thanks to Mentus, who'd rushed back over to check on him. Rose stood by his side, and they bowed again to their judge and the audience. Zandrophin gripped his right arm...trying his best to keep from bleeding on the arena floor.
"As I said before we started," Zandrophin said with even more confidence than before, "this routine is dangerous. You've just seen what could happen if something were to go wrong. The point of this was to show a bond between trainer and Pokemon. My first round performance showed how I keep my Pokemon in shape. This round shows how they keep me in shape. A Pokemon is only as strong as its trainer. Some of you may be disturbed by my actions. Let me leave you with this final thought: If a trainer is not willing to risk everything for his Pokemon, how can he expect his Pokemon to risk everything for him? We thank you for your attention."
The trio bowed again and awaited their judgement.
Do not fight for a cause or for what you believe in: Fight for yourself, because who you are rarely changes. Zandrophin
